Longitudinal APPEs, the Rural Pharmacist Associate Program (R-RxAP) and Urban Underserved Pharmacist Associate Program (U2-RxAP), offer pharmacy students a unique and immersive opportunity to engage deeply with rural and underserved communities. By embedding students in these communities over an extended period, we aim to cultivate a profound understanding of the distinct health challenges, social determinants and health care dynamics these communities face. Simultaneously, we aim to immerse students in the many deep and fulfilling personal and professional opportunities these communities offer. Through meaningful connections, our program seeks to prepare future pharmacists to serve with insight and compassion in diverse and underserved communities.
Applications are due September 12, 2025.
Rural Pharmacist Associate Program (R-RxAP)
R-RxAP is a seven-month longitudinal APPE for fourth year pharmacy students to live and train in rural communities across the state of Minnesota. Through this program, students will complete six of their eight rotations, including all required rotations (acute care, ambulatory care, community pharmacy, and institutional pharmacy) and two electives in a single rural community, allowing them to be fully immersed in the personal and professional aspects of being a rural pharmacist. R-RxAP students gain continuity experiences with patients, families, preceptors, staff, and the community – following patients through multiple care settings including the hospital, clinic, community pharmacy, and other areas of care, allowing students to see the impact of health and healthcare on patients and their communities. Each community has a lead preceptor, who serves as the primary point of contact for the student. R-RxAP will have intentional areas of integration with the Rural Physician Associate Program (RPAP) for third year medical students, including shared virtual webinars and onsite interprofessional education.
Urban Underserved Pharmacist Associate Program (U2-RxAP)
U2-RxAP is a seven-month longitudinal APPE for fourth year pharmacy students who want to serve patients in urban communities. Through his program, students will complete six of their eight rotations, including all required rotations (acute care, ambulatory care, community pharmacy, and institutional pharmacy) and two electives in a single urban community, allowing them to gain continuity experiences with patients, families, preceptors, staff, and the community – following patients through multiple care settings including the hospital, clinic, community pharmacy, and other areas of care, allowing students to see the impact of health and healthcare on patients and their communities. Each community has a lead preceptor, who serves as the primary point of contact for the student. U2-RxAP will have intentional areas of integration with longitudinal programs for third year medical students, including shared virtual webinars and onsite interprofessional education.
