Owatonna, Minnesota, is a vibrant city located in Steele County, approximately 70 miles south of the Twin Cities. With a population of around 26,420 as of the 2020 census, Owatonna offers a blend of small-town charm and regional economic significance.
Owatonna boasts a rich history dating back to 1854. The city is named after the Straight River, with the Dakota name "Wakpá Owóthaŋna" meaning "straight river." The downtown area features historic architecture, including the National Farmers Bank, designed by Louis Sullivan and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Cultural attractions include the Owatonna Arts Center and the State School Museum, both situated in the West Hills area, which also houses several nonprofit organizations.

Mayo Clinic Health System Owatonna – Mayo Clinic Health System Owatonna is an outpatient clinic that contains multiple specialties including Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Urgent Care, Cardiology, Endocrinology and many more. There are over 30 primary care providers practicing at the Mayo Clinic Health System Owatonna plus an additional 50 specialty providers.
The Ambulatory Clinical Pharmacy Services main focus is providing Medication Management Services through comprehensive medication review, pharmacogenomic interpretation, and chronic disease management through face to face and telehealth encounters. In addition to supporting the healthcare team by answering drug information questions, conducting chart reviews and providing pharmacotherapy lectures for medical staff.

Lead and Supporting Preceptor Bios
John Deranek, PharmD (Lead Preceptor, Sterling Pharmacy) - Graduated from University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy 2005 and helped open CVS Pharmacies in the Twin Cities market where he opened and managed multiple locations across the area. He then moved to HCMC outpatient pharmacy where he worked up to managing the Outpatient Community Pharmacies across HCMC. He has been Pharmacy Manager with Sterling Pharmacy in Owatonna since 2016 where he resides with his family.
Kimberly Kosloski Tarpenning, PharmD, BCACP (Supporting Preceptor, Mayo Clinic Health System Owatonna) - Kimberly Kosloski Tarpenning, PharmD, BCACP is a primary care ambulatory care pharmacist at Mayo Clinic. After graduating from University of Minnesota – College of Pharmacy she completed a PGY1 Ambulatory Care residency at Goodrich Pharmacy/HealthPartners Clinic through the University of Minnesota - College of Pharmacy residency program. After residency, Dr. Kosloski Tarpenning worked for University of Utah Health as an ambulatory care pharmacist. During the 3 years in Utah, Dr. Kosloski Tarpenning successfully set up 3 different ambulatory care practices in various outpatient clinics. She was then recruited by the Mayo Clinic in 2015 to set-up an ambulatory care practice at their Owatonna clinic in southern Minnesota.
William Clapp, PharmD (Supporting Preceptor, Owatonna Hospital, part of Allina Health) - William Clapp, PharmD, BCPS, is an Inpatient and Infusion Pharmacist at Allina Health. Dr. Clapp graduated from the University of Minnesota- College of Pharmacy and began his career as a hospital pharmacist at Mayo Clinic Health System- Austin.
Rotation / Learning Experience
Sterling Pharmacy (Retail APPE: 5 weeks)
- Description : Students will have opportunities to participate in patient centered dispensing roles as well as patient care activities as part of mandatory rotation activities. Students will also be required to participate in several enhanced pharmacy services as identified by the Preceptor/Student team. Students will be working directly with the preceptor either in the preceptor’s work area or in an adjacent work area in the pharmacy. Students will be participating in the pharmacy’s immunization program, the medication therapy management program, and in pharmacy dispensing functions. There will be additional opportunities for other enhanced pharmacy services.

Mayo Clinic Health System Owatonna (Ambulatory Care APPE: 10 weeks – the extended rotation does include one of the elective blocks)

- The Ambulatory Clinical Pharmacy Services main focus is providing Medication Management Services through comprehensive medication review, pharmacogenomic interpretation, and chronic disease management through face to face and telehealth encounters. In addition to supporting the healthcare team by answering drug information questions, conducting chart reviews, medication counseling, device education and providing pharmacotherapy lectures for medical staff. By the end of rotation, students are expected to be able to apply pharmacotherapeutic and patient assessment principals to real-life ambulatory patient cases. The majority of the student’s learning experiences will be hands-on through patient contact. Students will learn to work in an integrated team and develop inter-professional communication skills. Daily activities include patient encounters including documentation, answering drug information questions, and working with healthcare team members. Additional activities attending assigned topic discussions or journal clubs with other learners within Mayo Clinic and completing one medication based presentation.

Owatonna Hospital (Acute Care APPE: 5 weeks, Institutional APPE: 5 weeks)
- Description (including unique services, typical daily activities, student projects) Students will be working directly with the preceptor either in the preceptor's work area or in one of the patient care areas. Students will participate in rounds with the hospitalists, address Rx Consults, participate in the medication reconciliation process and partake in a daily safety meeting.
- Interprofessional experiences: Daily interprofessional team rounds, Grand Rounds, Clinical Pearls, Pharmacy Department meetings, shadow nursing, clinical office shared with hospitalists.
- Onsite Hours Monday-Friday from 7:00am-3:30pm

- Elective Information - Student will pick either a Patient Care elective or a Non-patient Care elective then work with preceptors to develop their ideal elective using opportunities.
- Patient Care Elective: 5 weeks
- Description: Student will be allowed to develop their own patient care elective based on the opportunities listed below. As part of the Patient Care elective the student will be expected to spend at minimum 3 weeks in patient care opportunities, which include:
- Anticoagulation (onsite in Owatonna/virtual) - work in the anticoagulation clinic for SEMN and Rochester regions including warfarin dosing and DOAC reviews; partial time onsite in Owatonna, partial time virtual
- Oncology (onsite in Owatonna/virtual) - work closely with cancer patients who receive oral or IV chemotherapy and collaborate with their medical oncology/hematology providers to meet the needs of my patients. Not only is patient education an important part of my role, but I also help verify and determine the effectiveness, safety and tolerance patients may experience during medication therapy; partial time onsite at different locations in SEMN, partial time virtual
- Antimicrobial (virtual) - work with the ambulatory ID team to manage patients on outpatient IV or complex oral antimicrobial therapy, and patients living with HIV. Primary activities include late resulting culture review, monitoring and evaluation of lab results, management of patient reported adverse drug events, patient counseling on antimicrobial therapy, and optimization of drug therapy (dosing, selection of preferred regimens, etc).
- Long Term Care Pharmacy -
- Specialty Clinical Pharmacy practice (requires travel to Rochester) - various different outpatient clinical pharmacy practices are available to shadow in Rochester including but not limited to transplant, GI, Cardio, Pediatric etc.
- Students will also have an opportunity to select from non-patient care opportunities when developing elective, which include:
