MLS Minor

Preparing for a professional career in healthcare or medical research?
Consider a minor in medical laboratory sciences!

Physicians, physician assistants, pharmacists, veterinarians, and other health care and public health professionals depend on the test results provided by the medical laboratory to provide patients with the best possible care. It is estimated that 70% of all diagnoses and treatment plans are based on medical laboratory test results. A medical laboratory minor provides students with the knowledge of laboratory testing as it relates to human disease, with a focus on medical microbiology, clinical chemistry, hematology, and transfusion medicine.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Completion of two of the following three prerequisite courses: Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Physiology (which need not be completed at the time of declaration)
  • Completion of 12 credits from the following courses (each of which are three credits), with at least nine credits from upper division courses:

PRE-HEALTH STUDENTS

If your future plans include becoming a physician, physician assistant, or other healthcare professional In which you will likely be dealing with laboratory test results as you treat patients, these courses in the medical laboratory sciences minor will give you the theoretical knowledge of the most frequently run medical laboratory tests.

MLSP 2022: Cracking the Code helps students explore health and wellness topics through laboratory scientists performing and evaluating test results to partner with physicians in diagnosing disease.

MLSP 5111: Concepts of Diagnostic Microbiology focuses on laboratory testing and how it relates to bacterial infections and some common yeast infections.

MLSP 5113: Advanced Concepts in Diagnostic Microbiology focuses on laboratory testing and how it relates to fungal, viral, and parasitic infections.

MLSP 5211: Hematology and Hemostasis focuses on common hematology tests, such as red and white blood cell counts, identification of normal white blood cells, hemoglobin analysis and testing for coagulation disorders, such as hemophilia.

MLSP 5313: Chemical Analysis in Health and Disease focuses on the chemical testing performed in the medical laboratory related to a wide range of disorders including, liver enzymes, blood gases, drug testing, cardiac markers, cholesterol, diabetes testing, and many more. Other courses that may be of interest include:

MLSP 5213: Diagnostic Hematology focuses on more advanced diagnostics, such as the cell morphology needed to identify abnormal white blood cells and the testing needed to diagnosis leukemias and anemias.

MLSP 5513: Transfusion Medicine Principles and Methods focuses on the testing utilized to provide safe blood products and causes of transfusion reactions in the patients receiving those blood products.

MICROBIOLOGY MAJORS

If your future plans include becoming certified to work in a hospital microbiology laboratory these courses in the medical laboratory sciences minor will provide you with the theoretical knowledge to pass the ASCP Microbiology Categorical certification exam.

MLSP 2033: Infectious Disease, Diagnosis and Treatment focuses on the laboratory’s role in the detection and diagnosis of commonly known pathogens, the correlation of these pathogens to laboratory results, and the interaction
between the laboratory and pharmacy to determine effective treatment.

MLSP 5511: Principles of Immunobiology provides students with a fundamental understanding of the immune system function, immune disorders, and medical laboratory testing.

Another course that may be of interest is:
MLSP 6401: Fundamentals of Molecular Diagnostics focuses on the principles of molecular technologies used for research and diagnostic purposes, including theoretical foundations,
