Students must comply with specific requirements within their program and within the Academic Health Sciences (see the list of requirements below). Once students are admitted to their program they will receive instructions to meet compliance requirements and continue to meet them throughout the program.
Information and instructions about each item of compliance will be included in your Welcome Letter.
MLS Program and Lab Safety Requirements
Students in all MLS programs are required to be compliant with the following requirements:
- Criminal Background Study (students will be sent specific instructions by admissions)
- Vaccination and Immunizations
- Annual reporting of flu vaccine
- Health Insurance Coverage
Required Training Modules- students will be assigned the following training modules at training.umn.edu:
- HIPAA & Information Security Training (renewed annually)
- Bloodborne pathogens training (renewed annually)
- Safety in the Research Lab
- Biological Safety in the Laboratory
- MLS Student Safety Training Canvas Course
- Sexual Assault Prevention
- Meet expectations for the program’s Technical Standards
- Additional requirements as indicated by specific clinical sites, such as updated TB test, drug screening or national background check
During the onboarding process, you will receive more information about which requirements are necessary at the point of matriculating into the program, and which will be required to complete later in the program. Students unable to meet these requirements for legitimate circumstances by the designated deadline can request a deadline extension by completing this form.
Students can access the following documents if needed by a clinical site:
- Background Studies: Students can log in to the DHS NETStudy homepage to access their background study under "Documents."
- Immunizations: Please go to Boynton Health to access your immunization records and to determine what is required to become compliant. If you need to provide your preceptor with a more detailed account of your immunization dates than what is available on the portal, contact Boynton at 612-624-2121 to request your immunization record.
Failure to comply with these requirements or receive an approved extension request will result in a registration hold placed on your account, and unenrollment of courses.
These compliance requirements will be fullfilled with the lab safety officer during classes.
