The Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) University of Minnesota chapter recently received recognition by being named chapter of the year at the AMCP Nexus 2018 in Orlando, Florida.

The AMCP University of Minnesota chapter is a student-run organization that promotes managed care education and appreciation through the many events they host throughout the year. Students who join the organization have the opportunity to learn more about the managed care and health insurance industry, attend corporate tours of managed care companies, network with local and national leaders in healthcare, participate in the Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) Competition, gain access to professionals and job opportunities at fortune 500 healthcare companies, and attend several local and national pharmacy conferences in cities such as: Orlando, San Francisco, and Washington D.C.

The organization's goals are to increase awareness of pharmacist opportunities in managed care, educate pharmacy students on how innovative healthcare solutions stemming from managed care can improve patient care quality and accessibility, provide a better understanding of the roles and relationships between the major pharmacy players in managed care, and facilitate opportunities for students, pharmacists and other professionals in the region to network and develop intra-professional relationships.

Being named Chapter of the Year was of great importance for the chapter because it meant that their hard work hadn’t gone unnoticed.

“It’s truly an honor that our chapter received first place for Chapter of the Year,” UMN chapter president Kayla Mills said. “It has been incredible to see our chapter evolve over the past couple years and to know all the time and hard work put into creating opportunities for student pharmacists’ growth in managed care has been recognized by others and has allowed for personal growth in creating leaders in pharmacy.”

The chapter isn’t satisfied with just being named chapter of the year - they are continuing to strive to make a difference.

“Currently, we have a seven-member Drug Monograph Committee creating summarized monographs to educate AMCP members of newly approved drugs coming to the market,” Mills said. “As well as a leadership team working towards expanding our company visits to new local and out-of-state opportunities; creating new opportunities for students and professionals to network; holding featured speaker events that not only focus on speaker’s careers but also pertinent topics in managed care; and educating patients about Medicare and commercial insurance at health fairs. We're also growing our student-professional mentor match program as over 65 members signed up this year; starting journal clubs to provide students with a better understanding of how to evaluate literature; increasing awareness of events through social media to engage and educate AMCP members and those not in the organization; and considering hosting a local P&T Competition day dinner to thank our judges and mentors and to honor our local winners.”

Mills is grateful that the chapter's hard work was recognized, and encourages more students to join AMCP.

“Being a part of AMCP, both on the local and national levels, allows you to expand your knowledge on the ways you can make a positive impact on patient lives,” Mills said. “Any students who are interested in joining are welcome to reach out to learn more.”
