Straka steps down as ECP department head

Robert Straka, PharmD, FCCP, head of the Department of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology (ECP) and professor, shared his decision to step down from his administrative role as head of the department, effective July 6, 2026.

Throughout his 14-year tenure as department head, Straka has provided the strategic vision, direction, and support that have sustained ECP’s standing as a nationally recognized and highly respected department. His leadership was instrumental in recruiting many talented faculty members. Through collaborative advocacy, he has championed numerous initiatives led by ECP’s outstanding members, advancing clinical and translational research in key areas such as pharmacogenomics, quantitative sciences, and various vital therapeutic areas. Straka supported ECP’s graduate and professional training program by establishing unique strategic partnerships with the University’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) as well as other internal and external stakeholders including alumni.

Straka also sustained his own robust contributions to teaching and research during this time. His work in cardiovascular pharmacotherapy and his novel programs in cardiovascular pharmacogenetics—including community-based participatory research with unique populations both in the Twin Cities and abroad—exemplify his dedication. His impact has been recognized, notably earning him the 2018 University of Minnesota President’s Community-Engaged Scholar Award (collegiate recipient) and the 2022 CTSI Mentor of the Year Award.
