Bio

Andrew Shim is currently the Head of Medical Affairs for AAPAC (Americas, Asia-Pacific, Australia) Region at Arena Pharmaceuticals, a biopharmaceutical company. Prior professional practice settings include other large to small biopharmaceutical companies, managed care, and health systems.

Dr. Shim has been actively practicing in managed care since 1999 and has diverse experience in multiple healthcare segments and government programs. His areas of expertise include formulary, clinical policy, trend & cost management, medical strategies, clinical programs, utilization management, real-world-evidence, and outcomes research. In biopharmaceuticals as well as in managed care, Dr. Shim held multiple leadership positions, and has extensive expertise in medical affairs and clinical development, both in the US and globally.

Dr. Shim’s interest also extends beyond pharmacy into healthcare law, regulatory, compliance, and various management and leadership topics. His experience and execution are diverse from conducting economic & utilization analysis, outcomes research, building registries, and overseeing observational studies to leading phase 2-4 global clinical trials. He is very passionate about and committed to teaching future PharmD professionals, especially in the areas of managed care and biopharmaceutics, and has been involved with the UMN College of Pharmacy since 2001. He was previously the Course Director for Pharmacy Law and is the current Course Director for Phar 6236.
