Course Description
This course consists of 3 content modules on hormonal contraception, smoking cessation and opioid antagonists. Each module may be taken individually, or together as a full course. This course will meet the expected training requirements from the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy for pharmacists to be able to prescribe hormonal contraception, nicotine replacement therapy, and opioid antagonists. Each module is designed to build on the pharmacist's existing clinical knowledge and prepare the pharmacist for the initial assessment, selection of appropriate therapies, and adjusting therapies based on patient outcomes. Course modules will have a significant focus on application of clinical knowledge to patient cases.

Completion requirements:
Pharmacist Prescriptive Authority consists of three (3) modules which can be completed separately. Each module has one or more presentations and a short assessment. Participants will be required to pass (70% or better) on the assessment, complete the module evaluation and submit a verification.

Free, CE for these modules will be provided free of charge for our UMN CoP community in order to support continuing professional development and pharmacy practice advancement in Minnesota.

Learning Objectives
Hormonal Contraception
- Identify mechanisms of action of hormonal contraceptive agents.
- Describe initiation, contraindications, precautions, and adverse effects of all hormonal contraceptives, including drug-drug interactions.
- Describe the MN Board of Pharmacy prescribing protocol for self-administered hormonal contraceptives
- Assess a patient and determine most appropriate hormonal contraception, in alignment with evidence, clinical guidelines (CDC MEC), and individual patient characteristics and preferences.
- Develop an appropriate care plan, including education and follow-up for a patient using hormonal contraception.
- In a patient experiencing side effects from CHCs, identify hormone imbalance causing the side effect & recommend appropriate changes.
Smoking Cessation: Nicotine Replacement
- Participants will be able to list FDA approved smoking cessation products.
- Participants will be able to list mechanism of actions of smoking cessation products.
- Participants will be able to identify adverse effects associated with different smoking cessation
products. - Participants will Understand how to apply the Minnesota Pharmacist Prescribing Protocol
Opioid Antagonists
- State some factors that can increase risk of opioid overdose
- Identify signs and symptoms of opioid overdose
- Identify steps in responding to an opioid overdose including administration of naloxone
- Describe legal considerations for prescribing, dispensing, possessing, and administering naloxone in Minnesota
- Review resources to access naloxone
Faculty
Jean Moon, PharmD, FCCP, BCACP
Dr. Moon is a Professor in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Minnesota and Associate Dean of Student Affairs, University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy. She has been teaching pulmonary medicine for about ten years to national and local pharmacy professional audiences, including smoking cessation and motivational interviewing.
Laura Palombi, PharmD, MPH, MAT
Dr. Palombi, is a adjunct faculty member at the College of Pharmacy, School of Public Health, and Center for Bioethics and a Research Scientist at Essentia Institute for Rural Health. Dr. Palombi graduated with her PharmD from the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy in 2012 and completed a PGY1 residency with the University of Minnesota’s ambulatory care pharmacy program in 2013.
Laura Palombi has been working with rural and Tribal communities to address opioid use and overdose for a decade.
Chrystian Pereira, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Pereira is an Associate Professor in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Minnesota in the department of Pharmaceutical Care and Health Systems. He has been teaching pharmacotherapy at the College of Pharmacy since 2006 and been lecturing on smoking cessation at UMMC Family Medicine Residency since 2004.
Sarah Westberg, PharmD, FCCP, BCPS
Dr. Westberg is currently Associate Dean for Professional Affairs and a Professor in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Minnesota. She graduated with her Pharm.D. from Drake University, completed a Pharmaceutical Care Leadership Residency at the University of Minnesota, and then joined the University of Minnesota faculty. During her career she has provided comprehensive medication management services in family medicine, internal medicine, and women’s health clinics. She is dedicated to teaching future pharmacists to provide patient-centered care, and works passionately to increase the opportunities and sustainability of pharmacists services to improve the health and lives of our patients and communities.
