Summary

Dr. Sorensen has been with the University of Minnesota since 1998. Prior to joining the University, he held a joint appointment with the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Center and Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia and also served as a Clinical Manager for PCS Health Systems. He is a native Minnesotan, hailing from the small rural community of Tyler, MN.

His scholarly interests focus on integration of comprehensive medication management services with primary care. His teaching activities are centered on development of leadership skills required to lead change in health care. He serves as Associate Department Head in the Department of Pharmaceutical Care and Health Systems, focusing on supporting practice-based faculty and practice-related activities of the department.

Professional Associations

Dr. Sorensen serves as the Executive Director of the Alliance for Integrated Medication Management, a national non-profit organization that supports wide-spread integration of team-based medication management services into the care of high-risk, high-cost patients suffering from multiple chronic health conditions. AIMM convenes and facilitates communities of learning focused on improving medication use, consults with partners who share a mission to improve ways in which patients with complex medication use needs are served, and coaches front-line practitioners to apply care model implementation strategies known to produce success.

Dr. Sorensen currently is serving the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy as President-Elect (2018-19), President (2019-2020) and Past-President (2020-21).He has served in in leadership roles with other national pharmacy organizations, including the American Pharmacists Association and the American Colle

Research

Research Summary/Interests

Dr. Sorensen applies a variety of research methods to study factors that underpin successful implementation and integration of novel medication management services in health care settings. A key fact of this work is commitment to a community-engaged approach to scholarship that relies on partnerships with health care practitioners, integrated health systems, state and federal agencies and other health system stakeholders. This work has been supported by over $6 million in funding from federal, state and private sources.

Teaching Areas

Dr. Sorensen has long held an interest in leadership development and the manner in which leader’s facilitate positive change. He has developed and leads a unique 24-month pharmacy practice residency experience focused on preparing graduates to lead practice advancement in ambulatory care. With a group of colleagues he developed and leads the College’s Leadership Emphasis Area in the PharmD program, which has been recognized by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy’s Innovation in Teaching Program.

Course Director, Phar 6937: Foundations of Leadership. An elective course exploring a range of personal and organizational leadership topics and strategies.

Course Director, Phar 6938: Developing Adaptive Leadership. Overview of the adaptive leadership model and its application to leading change in pharmacy education and practice.

Course Director, Phar 6939/6940: Leading Change Experience I & II. An immersive experience in which students apply leadership frameworks and skills to a defined initiative.

Co-Director, Leadership Emphasis Area. A 16-credit, Board of Regents-approved curricular emphasis focused on developing individuals with skills and values required to create positive change in health care.
