Heather Blue, PharmD, BCPS, FMSP, BCEMP

Dr. Heather Blue joined the faculty of the College of Pharmacy in 2016. As shared clinical faculty, she initiated emergency medicine pharmacy services in the emergency department (ED) at St. Luke’s Hospital of Duluth. In advancing this clinical practice site, she precepts students and residents in the ED while serving as the PGY2 residency program director and as the liaison on multiple interprofessional committees. Her didactic teaching focuses on acute care topics including ACLS, toxicology, and infectious disease, mostly in the third year of the pharmacy curriculum. Additionally, her commitment to rural health is demonstrated in her teaching of an interdisciplinary rural health elective. She remains active in local and national professional organizations advocating for emergency medicine pharmacists and the profession as a whole.

The Academies for Excellence recognizes outstanding faculty in the areas of scientific research, educational scholarship, clinical practice, and team science.

My research is focused on pharmacy services in the emergency department. Initially I started my academic career studying the knowledge and beliefs of healthcare professionals regarding naloxone education and distribution from the emergency department. I continue to study emergency medicine pharmacy including the importance of psychological safety, post-emergency debriefing, and the representation of emergency medicine pharmacists in the media.

Clinical Experience Statement

Following my PGY1 residency, I continued to work in a variety of acute care areas including the ICU and emergency department. Through my academic position I developed emergency medicine pharmacy services at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth. I continue to practice in this setting as well as precepting students in this area. In addition to the direct patient care in the ED, I serve as the liaison between that department and pharmacy, serving on multiple interprofessional committees and overseeing several administrative projects.
