Course Description
Drugs are delivered to patients through dosage forms, such as tablets, capsules, suspensions, injections and ointments. In this course, the students will develop a comprehensive understanding of the principles governing effective drug delivery and the challenges associated with each route of delivery. The students will become familiar with the principles and processes governing the design, preparation and use of different pharmaceutical dosage forms. This knowledge will be used to design the dosage form of a “hypothetical” drug. Finally, the students will evaluate the top twenty prescription drugs in the United State market.
Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Understand the scientific and foundational principles governing the design of pharmaceutical dosage forms.
- Explain the different routes of administration.
- Describe the different types of dosage form and their properties.
- Explain the strengths and limitations of each pharmaceutical dosage form.
- Explain drug-device combinations and the unique advantages of these drug delivery systems
- Analyze the properties of the drug to aid in the design of dosage forms.
- Design a dosage form integrating the drug properties, drug dose and the disease being treated.
