Scott Setzepfandt, a 1979 graduate of the College of Pharmacy, has been selected to receive the University of Minnesota Alumni Service Award. The award recognizes his service to the college and the University, and to the profession of pharmacy. U of M President Eric Kaler will confer the award at the Alumni Association’s gala celebratory event during Homecoming Week on Oct. 4.

“I am very humbled by the folks who submitted my nomination and letters of support,” said Setzepfandt. “I have always enjoyed volunteering for various College of Pharmacy programs as it kept me in touch with the college and its students. To be honored by the University for doing so is just icing on the cake.”

After a prolific professional career in the pharmaceutical industry, the majority of which was spent as a government affairs manager, Setzepfandt retired in March 2018. Prior to retirement, he served as Senior Regional Manager, State Government Affairs at Genentech. In this role, he was responsible for addressing legislative and regulatory issues that impact the biotech and pharmaceutical industry. He previously served in a similar position at Hoffmann-LaRoche; and as a division sales manager at Syntex Laboratories.

Setzepfandt is an active member of the Minnesota Pharmacists Association, and served as the organization’s president during which he used his government affairs experience to create more advocacy in the association. He also is a member of the college’s Century Mortar Club, where he served on the Board of Directors since 2004 and as president from 2008-11.

Throughout his career, he has mentored dozens of student pharmacists. He is a past recipient of the Pharmacy Alumni Society’s Mentor of the Year Award in recognition of his genuine interest in and willingness to mentor students, and his ability to create a positive mentoring experience for students.

One of his nominators wrote, “Scott’s dedication to the College of Pharmacy and the University of Minnesota is extraordinary. He is an alumni volunteer leader who truly cares about the University. He is always willing to try to do more for pharmacy students and the college. He is a pharmacist who appreciates all that the University has done for him and tries to do all that he can to give back. He is an exceptionally appreciative person who knows how important it is to be able to say ‘thanks.’"
