Ramaiah Muthyala, Ph.D., research associate professor, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the India Association of Minnesota in recognition of his outstanding work on awareness and policy advocacy for rare diseases for the Asian Indian community. The award was presented at the association's Connect India annual event on Feb. 2.

“This award is a testament that the Asian Indian community in Minnesota recognizes that rare diseases issues are social issues and affect all nationalities,” said Muthyala, who is also president and CEO of the Indian Organization for Rare Diseases. “It is gratifying to note the event is attended by many Minnesota state senators, representatives, and mayors of cities who expressed their support to pass the upcoming bill State Rare Diseases Advisory Council. I am very pleased to know that the University of Minnesota has become a huge resource to the Asian Indian community for the diagnosis and treatment of rare diseases.”

The India Association of Minnesota is the umbrella organization to a multitude of regional organizations in the state that aims to build a strong and cohesive community of over 50,000 strong Asian Indians in Minnesota. Through its mission, it promotes cultural understanding and heritage; and provides a charitable hand to causes in America and India.
