Chemistry PhD student Isabella Jacobsen was named a NIH T32 Fellow! Isabella is co-advised by professors Gunda Georg and Will Pomerantz. She works closely with Medicinal Chemistry’s Dr. Georg in her lab.

The NIH T32 training program is meant to enable institutions to recruit individuals for predoctoral and postdoctoral research training in specified shortage areas. The goal is to prepare qualified trainees for careers that have a significant impact on the health-related research needs of the nation.

Isabella was selected as a fellow on the Chemistry Biology Interface Training Grant housed here at the University of Minnesota. Predoctoral trainees for this training grant program are selected from a pool of graduate students who have been recruited by the Chemistry; Biochemistry, Molecular Biology & Biophysics (BMBB); and Medicinal Chemistry Departments. You can read more about the CBITG here.

Her interdisciplinary research combines organic synthesis, biophysical assays, and cellular biology to develop proteolysis targeting chimeras (PROTACs) that recruit a cancer and sperm specific E3 ligase, MAGEA11. Her ultimate goal is to study how these PROTACs can be used as therapeutics for cancer and male contraception.

You can read more about the impactful work of the Georg Lab here.

As a CBITG trainee, Isabella is excited to participate in CBIG seminars, organize the Chemical Biology Colloquium, and attend professional development events to guide her future career decisions.

Way to go, Isabella! We’re looking forward to seeing what you can accomplish.
