Dr. Carrie Haskell-Luevano Elected AAAS Fellow
March 28, 2025

Dr. Carrie Haskell-Luevano, professor and the Philip S. Portoghese Endowed Chair in chemical neuroscience in the College of Pharmacy, has been named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Election as an AAAS Fellow is an honor bestowed upon AAAS members by their peers, and recognizes efforts on behalf of the advancement of science or its applications that are scientifically or socially distinguished. Haskell-Luevano was elected in the Section on Pharmaceutical Sciences for distinguished contributions “to the field of neuroscience, particularly understanding the role of melanocortin receptors in appetite/obesity and their potential as therapeutic targets.”
Haskell-Luevano is also a scholar in the University of Minnesota Medical School’s Institute for Translational Neuroscience. Her research focuses on the understanding of G protein-coupled receptors and their involvement in numerous biological functions, including feeding behavior, pain and obesity. By using multidisciplinary approaches to study endocrine systems, her work has led to the discovery of “one of a kind” molecular tool and probe compounds. These molecules are likely to advance therapeutic discovery for diseases like Type 2 diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome, and neuropathic pain.
Haskell-Luevano now joins nine other AAAS Fellows from the College of Pharmacy: Dr. Gunda Georg, Dr. Patrick Hanna, Dr. Rodney Johnson, Dr. Philip Portoghese, Dr. Tom Shier, Dr. Robert Vince, Dr. Carston (Rick) Wagner, Dr. Natalia Tretyakova, and Dr. Calvin Sun.
Haskell-Luevano’s esteemed fellow counterparts include one other from the University of Minnesota.
