The Record Summer 2021

From the Dean

Dean Lynda WelageDear alumni and friends,

As we move through these long, beautiful days of summer, this issue of The Record takes a look back at the many recognitions and celebrations that filled our college life this past spring. From the commencement ceremonies of our class of 2021 PharmD and MS/PhD graduates, to the first ever Dean’s Scholarship & Fellowship Celebration that was held virtually, our community was filled with activity. We’ve also included highlights that encapsulate many tremendous achievements by students, staff, faculty and alumni in the last quarter.

New Group of Pharmacy Residents Join the College

portrait photos of all new residentsTwenty-two new residents started July 1, hailing from Pittsburgh to California and places in-between. While 12 were University of Minnesota graduates, we welcome all to the UMN College of Pharmacy family.  We wish them well this year and look forward to everyone in our community connecting with and supporting them throughout the year.

We are proud that the match rate for University of Minnesota was 72% (Nat’l avg 67%), down slightly from last year’s record-setting 78%. University of Minnesota graduates were matched with programs across the country. We are proud of them and also want to encourage them to stay connected with the College as they will alway be part of our alumni community. If any of the residents or other graduates have news to share with the college, please email it to us at pharm@umn.edu.

Experiential Education Team Recognized by AACP

The American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP)'s Award of Excellence in Experiential Education is presented annually to one deserving individual or group of individuals for their outstanding contribution to the world of experiential education. This year, the association changed things up a bit by extending the recognition to all institutional members. In doing so, they acknowledged the tremendous effort demonstrated in keeping all experiential education departments operating in spite of the many challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.

"AACP's recognition is a great testament to the dedication, creativity, and hard work of operations team members, course directors, preceptors, and students to address a crisis and still reach our goals of contributing to patient care through learning and on-time graduation," said Andy Traynor, assistant dean for experiential education. "It is also a reminder that beyond this crisis is an opportunity to take what we've learned together and harness opportunities for further contributions to student learning and patient care."

Dean Emeritus Speedie pens new College of Pharmacy history book

SpeedieDr. Marilyn K. Speedie was dean of the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy from 1996-2017, when she began her phased retirement that ended in 2020. During her tenure as dean, Speedie increased the admission rate of the College of Pharmacy by expanding the program to the University of Minnesota, Duluth campus, formed the College of Pharmacy’s Center for Leading Healthcare Change, and built a national presence for the program through service.

Alumni Supporting the College of Pharmacy

deans scholarship gold and maroon emblemThe University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy has always aimed to recognize generous donors who support students, faculty, research and the organization on an annual basis. Building on this tradition, the College is excited to announce the Dean’s Circle Giving Societies, which will serve as the framework for recognizing donors on an annual basis. Recognition in one of the Dean's Circle giving societies serves to celebrate generosity and honor the individuals and corporations who choose to invest in the future of pharmacy at the University of Minnesota.
