Medication Therapy Management – also known as MTM – is a continually evolving practice where you can make a tremendous impact on patient care. By meeting directly with patients to assess their medication therapy and needs, you will help them discover why the pharmacist should be a core member of the patient’s healthcare team.

Target Audience

For any pharmacist interested in implementing their own MTM practice site or seeking to further develop an existing practice site, this online continuing education activity will prove valuable. This course will enable participants to make a proper evaluation before initiating a MTM practice, while highlighting the important infrastructure components of MTM services. In addition, participants will learn about billing, marketing, and competency tools to ensure the ongoing success of an MTM practice.

Completion Requirements

Successful completion is 70% or better on two assessments and completion of an evaluation and verification of completion.

Registration for the Fall 2016 session of Building an MTM Practice is now closed. The next session of this course will be offered in fall of 2017.

Learning Objectives

After completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe MTM practice from the implementation perspective.
  2. List variables to assess and methods for assessment prior to developing a MTM practice.
  3. Outline important infrastructure components of a MTM practice.
  4. Utilize appropriate billing and marketing opportunities and procedures for a MTM practice.
  5. Implement a plan for maintaining professional competency and quality for MTM practice.

Schedule

During this knowledge-based online activity, materials will be released on a weekly basis. Content modules consist of various instructional materials, including: presentations, handouts, self-evaluation questions and optional assignments, including a practice plan.

Participants will be required to pass (70% or better) a 30-point quiz released the third week of the activity and a 22-point quiz released the sixth week of the activity.

Participants can log in and access the learning materials 24 hours/day-7 days/week, at their convenience. This activity totals 20 contact hours.

  • Optional Assignment: Developing Your Practice Plan Part I: Intro, Vision, Practice Environment
Week 2
  • Creating the Pharmacy Practice Infrastructure:

  • Creating the Pharmacy Practice Infrastructure: Documentation
  • Optional Assignment: Developing Your Practice Plan Part II: Describing Staffing Resources and Documentation Needs
Week 3
  • Collaborating with Healthcare Providers in the Community: Establishing Relationships and Communicating with Members of the Patient’s Healthcare Team
  • Collaborative Practice Agreements
  • Optional E-Symposium (based on availability of the instructors)
  • Optional Assignment: Developing a Practice Plan Part III Collaboration and Communication with Healthcare Providers
  • Optional Assignment: Draft a CPA pertinent to your practice
Week 4
  • Understanding Current Payers of MTM Services
  • Billing for MTM Services
  • Required: Exam 1
  • Optional Assignment: Developing a Practice Plan Part IV – Incorporating a Billing Plan
Week 5
  • Proposing MTM as a Benefit to Local Employers
  • Marketing Patient Care Services to Patients, Providers and Payers
  • Optional Assignment: Developing a Practice Plan Part V: Incorporating a Marketing Plan
  • Optional Assignment: Draft marketing materials for your proposed practice
Week 6
  • Continuous Professional Development (CPD) for the MTM Pharmacists
  • Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) for your MTM Practice
  • Optional E-Symposium (based on availability of the instructors)
  • Optional Assignment: Developing a Practice Plan Part VI: Implementing CPD and CQI
Week 7
  • Time to catch up
  • Required: Exam 2
  • E-Symposium 4: How I manage it all, seeing patients every day
  • Optional Assignment: Finalize Practice Plan and design an action plan

CE completion requirements
  • CE participants must be pharmacists.
  • Participants must complete activity content and 2 quizzes (passing with a 70% or better on each). This activity provides optional assignments, as well.
  • Following successful completion of the activity requirements, course evaluation, and a verification of completion form, participants will be able to access their CPE data directly from the Monitor. Once information is received by NABP, the tracking system will make CPE data for each participant available to the state boards of pharmacy where the participant is licensed or registered. Please allow 4 weeks after course completion for data to be complete.
