Derek D. Borkowski

Derek BorkowskiClass of 2018, Duluth

Derek D. Borkowski is currently pursuing his Doctor of Pharmacy degree at the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy on the Duluth Campus. He completed his pre-pharmacy coursework at Winona State University in Winona, MN. Prior to pharmacy school Derek was heavily involved with youth in the Winona, MN area through his positions coaching junior high sports at Cotter Schools, and as a Big (mentor) with Big Brothers, Big Sisters of America.

In his time at the College, Derek has enjoyed the privilege of serving his fellow students through his positions as a Class Representative for the Class of 2018, as Vice President – Duluth and President-Elect of the Pharmacy College Board (Student Government) and will look to continue this in his role as President for the 2016-2017 academic year. Further, Derek has enjoyed providing opportunities for students in the College to learn about careers and gain exposure to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry as President of the Industry Pharmacists Organization (IPhO) student chapter on his campus by organizing educational sessions and networking with industry professionals in the state.

He has also been an actively involved member with the Minnesota Pharmacy Student Alliance (MPSA) and National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) student chapter.

From these and other involvements, Derek was fortunate to be the recipient of MPSA’s “Biggest Advocate for the College of Pharmacy” award for his article in Drug Topics magazine, the Deborah A. Kasper Memorial award given annually to a PD1 student, a Peter’s Leadership Scholarship for his development of a healthcare leadership communications elective identified to fix an unmet need in the College’s curriculum, and of the NCPA student chapter’s 3rd place team award as a presenter for the annual student pharmacy business plan competition.

In addition to his involvement at the College, Derek works as a pharmacy intern at CVS Health and will be an intern with Mylan Pharmaceuticals in the Medical Affairs department this upcoming summer at their corporate headquarters in Canonsburg, PA.

Derek’s long-term career mission is working to create solutions to the fragmentation crisis in healthcare through innovative collaborative and technological solutions.

In his spare time, Derek enjoys reading non-fiction, watching Minnesota sports teams and progressing his skills as a novice computer programmer and web designer.
