Jessica Astrup is pursuing her Doctor of Pharmacy Degree at the University of Minnesota-College of Pharmacy with an expected graduation date of May 2014. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies from the University of Minnesota in 2009.
Jessica’s communications background allowed her to study abroad on a Semester at Sea in 2009, which exposed her to numerous cultures and healthcare climates and opened her eyes to the need for strong, dedicated leaders within her generation. She is committed to expanding the roles of pharmacists in order to better serve our communities by improving overall access to healthcare.
Jessica also has a passion for independent business and works as a pharmacy intern at Goodrich Pharmacy in Anoka, MN. Her strengths according to the strengthsfinder assessment are Relator, Achiever, Woo, Self-assurance and Individualization. These relationship-focused strengths have guided her education and will continue to guide her career because she believes that strong relationships between colleagues, patients and other leaders are necessary for progress and change.
Jessica was the professional committee co-chair for Phi Delta Chi professional fraternity during the 2011-2012 school year. She is the 2012-2013 Vice President of Communications for the Minnesota Pharmacy Student Alliance and interfraternal chair for Phi Delta Chi. Jessica also has a passion for teaching and sharing her love for pharmacy. She capitalized on this passion in her role as a teaching assistant in the pharmaceutical care lab where she taught first year pharmacy students while also serving as a link between these students and the faculty. She believes that the best leaders are able to inspire others to act and this was an excellent outlet for her to connect with other leaders in her field.
Upon graduation, Jessica hopes to utilize her strengths to continue to push the boundaries of pharmacy practice and improve access to healthcare in rural communities by helping create new opportunities for pharmacists and independent pharmacy owners.
