Primary providers include board certified internists, psychiatrists, a rheumatologist, family practitioners, a urologist, an oncologist, and nurse practitioners. Pharmaceutical care and collaborative prescribing is provided for patients in the center's clinic via referrals for drug therapy management of anticoagulation, hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes, schizophrenia, and other chronic conditions.
Pharmacy Services:
The Pharmacy has gradually evolved to one of the most advanced in the United States. Medication management services with collaborative prescribing are provided by approximately twelve clinical pharmacists to thousands of patients annually. Automation includes provider order entry, completely computerized medical record, bar code medication dispensing and administration, and automated dispensing cabinets.
Resident’s Educational Experience:
On Monday and Tuesday mornings, the resident sees approximately 6 patients. Each appointment is 20 minutes in which to review and reconcile the patient's medications, assess vital signs, evaluate laboratory results, and formulate a treatment plan. A progress note is entered into the electronic chart for each visit. The resident is also responsible for scheduling appointments, renewing medications, and conferring with providers regarding new prescriptions. Time outside of clinic is devoted to projects such as the research project, preparing for clinic the next day, researching drug information questions, etc. The resident attends a diabetes group clinic on Wednesday mornings. The group is designed to informally discuss diet, exercise, and medications related to diabetes. It consists of 4-6 patients with diabetes, a dietitian, a case manager, and a clinical pharmacist. On Wednesday afternoons, the resident works on the residency project, presentations, case presentations, etc. The resident is in clinic all day Thursdays and Fridays seeing 10-16 patients per day. The resident attends various meetings such as the Medical Executive Board (MEB) meetings, Pharmacist's meetings, VA conference calls, etc. The resident helps precept pharmacy students in the latter part of the residency year.
