Academic Standing Committee Policy

The Academic Standing Committee, a subcommittee of the Student Affairs Committee, consists of four faculty members and two students. This committee meets regularly to monitor the academic progress of students, consider petitions from students who wish to depart from the established program requirements or have a requirement waived, and adjudicate accusations of student misconduct.

American Council on Pharmaceutical Education (ACPE) Complaint Policy

The ACPE has an obligation to assure itself that any institution which seeks or holds a preaccreditation or accreditation status for its professional program(s) conducts its affairs with honesty and frankness.

Background Study Requirement

Minnesota law requires that any student who provides services that involve unsupervised direct contact with patients and residents at hospitals, nursing homes, and other health care facilities licensed by the Minnesota Department of Health undergo a background study conducted by the state. The study covers civil agency findings related to maltreatment of children or vulnerable adults and a range of criminal convictions. A student who is disqualified from having direct patient contact as a result of the background study, and whose disqualification is not set aside by the Commissioner of Health, may not participate in a clinical placement in these licensed health care facilities. Failure to pass the background study is grounds for dismissal from the doctor of pharmacy program.

Campus Transfers (pdf)

Under very specific and rare circumstances, transferring between the Twin Cities and Duluth campuses can be allowed.

Chemical Dependency

The College of Pharmacy supports the efforts of chemically dependent students to become free of their dependency problems.

Class Attendance/Absences

Students are expected to attend every class for which they are registered.  Students should contact the Office of Student Services if they experience an illness or family emergency that prevents them from attending class.

Course Waiver Policy

A student may request a waiver of a course in the required curriculum by obtaining a Course Waiver Form from the Office of Student Services and then engaging in a discussion with the course director and section director (when appropriate) to identify supporting documents or other performance related evidence (challenge exam, writing exercise, practice demonstrations, etc.) required to demonstrate competency in the subject area.  A student’s request for a course waiver should begin well in advance of the beginning of the semester.  In general, a course waiver must be initiated five days prior to the start of a course, however, course directors can grant specific exceptions.

CPR Training Policy

The University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy requires all Pharm.D. students to maintain valid CPR certification upon completion of the second semester of the Pharm.D. curriculum. This certification must be either CPR for the Professional Rescuer (American Red Cross) or Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers (American Heart Association). This qualification ensures all students have demonstrated the skills necessary to respond during emergencies at internship sites or during Early Pharmacy Experience with Community Teachers (EPhECT) visits. The Office of Student Services (OSS) will validate all certificates of completion. Students who don’t complete certification will have a registration hold placed on their record and will not be allowed to participate in required EPhECT and Advance Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs).

Gift & Donation Policy (pdf)

This policy shows the rules & guidelines for student organizations who seek outside funding for events & activities.

Grading Policies

This policy became effective fall 1997, replacing all previous grading policies.

Graduation Requirements

Degrees from the University of Minnesota are granted by the Board of Regents on the recommendation of the College of Pharmacy faculty. To be granted a degree, a student must fulfill several requirements.

Health Insurance

All pharmacy students will be automatically enrolled in Boynton Health Service's health insurance for AHC students unless they provide certification proving they are covered by adequate health insurance.  Please visit Boynton's website www.bhs.umn.edu/insurance/ahc.htm for more information on the requirements and the coverage of this insurance.

Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)

Federal law and University of Minnesota policy requires all students, faculty and staff to complete appropriate training to comply with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996.  The University and the college are left liable if the training is not complete.

The Academic Health Center Privacy Office annually assigns HIPAA training to all incoming students.  Students are required to complete three training modules and can access them from almost any computer.

Students who do not complete HIPAA training will not be allowed to have any patient contact through and will be removed from any current enrollment in the EPhECT program, mentoring, rotations, pharmaceutical care clinic, immunization tour, clinical research opportunities, and all other potential patient contact situations.  In addition a hold will be placed on their student record and they will not be allowed to register for the following semester until the training is complete.

Honor Code (pdf)

The University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy Honor System-developed, assumed, and administered by students-is intended to provide a framework of expectations and responsibilities for members of the College of Pharmacy community. The student-run Honor Council assumes the responsibility of administering the Honor Code.  It is intended to promote a spirit of community, a spirit of professionalism, and a spirit of trust. It challenges pharmacy students to adopt principles of professional behavior and responsibility within the context of academic honesty, integrity, and community standards.

Immunization Policy

Students in the College of Pharmacy must be immune to or complete a series of the following immunizations: Tuberculosis, MMR, Hepatitis B, Chicken Pox, and Tetanus/Diptheria.
