The introductory pharmacy practice experiences involve interactions with health care consumers and pharmacists, and actual practice experiences in community and institutional settings, and permit students, under appropriate supervision and as permitted by practice regulations, to assume direct patient care responsibilities. The introductory pharmacy practice experiences begin early in the curriculum, are interfaced with didactic course work that provides an introduction to the profession, and continue in a progressive manner leading to entry into the advanced pharmacy practice experiences. There are five components to the early experiential program: - Early Pharmacy Education with Community Teachers (EPhECT)
- Mentoring Program
- Community Practice IPPE
- Institutional Practice IPPE
- Pharmaceutical Care Clinic (PCC)
Community Practice IPPE Through the Community IPPE pharmacy students will be familiarized with the fundamentals of pharmacy practice in the community pharmacy setting. Educational outcomes for the IPPE can be classified in the domains of The Practice of Pharmacy and Communication and Professional Behavior. These outcomes address basic skills and knowledge that assist in the integration of classroom instruction and prepare the student for the Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs) offered through the pharmacy curriculum. The Community Practice IPPE is three weeks in length with the student spending at least 40 hours per week in the community pharmacy setting. It occurs in the summer following the first professional year. Sites throughout Minnesota are used for this experience. Institutional Practice IPPE Through the Institutional IPPE pharmacy students will be familiarized with the fundamentals of pharmacy practice in the institutional pharmacy setting. Educational outcomes for the IPPE can be classified in the domains of The Practice of Pharmacy and Communication and Professional Behavior. A patient safety module is a requisite component of this experience with an on-line learning module completed during the spring semester preceding the on-site experience and a patient safety project and report required at the practice site. These outcomes address basic skills and knowledge that assist in the integration of classroom instruction and prepare the student for the Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs) offered through the pharmacy curriculum. The Institutional Practice IPPE is three weeks in length with the student spending at least 40 hours per week in the institutional (hospital) pharmacy setting. It occurs in the summer following the second professional year. Sites throughout Minnesota are used for this experience. Pharmaceutical Care Clinic (PCC) A component of the third professional year course, Phar 6175 - Pharmaceutical Care Skills V, the PCC requires students to provide direct pharmaceutical care services to a patient under the supervision of a pharmacist preceptor. This occurs during scheduled visits by the patient to the clinic which is held on campus during the fall semester. The goals of the PCC are:
