Teaching Philosophy

We are a diverse rotation site that allows the students to concentrate on areas of pharmacy that they are interested in, or areas that they feel they need more emphasis. We try to accomplish this in a positive and flexible atmosphere.

Our teaching philosophy involves encouraging students to put their vast knowledge  into practical use in an everyday busy pharmacy environment. The students will be asked questions daily by all four pharmacists to help them learn to relate answers to patients in a way in which the patient understands.

Detailed Site Information

Pharmacy Services
The GuidePoint Pharmacy is an independently owned and operated pharmacy located in Downtown Brainerd. We employ four full time pharmacists and five technicians. Due to our professional hours of 9-5:30 M-F and Sat 9-noon,we have ample opportunity for one-on-one student-to-preceptor interaction.

We service ambulatory patients as well as area group homes and nursing homes. We offer patients services such as blood pressure screening, blood glucose screening and cholesterol screening daily by appointment.

We have both a semi-private booth for simple questions from our patients, and a private counseling room for in-dept consultations.

Because we are a Health Mart “Diabetes Life Center” our counseling room has a networked computer system with all of the latest software for downloading nearly every brand of glucose monitor made. Two of our pharmacists have recently undergone Medtronic insulin pump training. This allows our students the opportunity to learn more about pump therapy. We also utilize the private area for specialty fitting of diabetic shoes and custom formed insoles.

We currently perform MTM services for BlueCross/BlueShield, MN Medical Assistance, Mirixa, and Outcomes. Our students are heavily encouraged to take advantage of our MTM opportunities.

There are housing options available for students who do a rotation at GuidePoint Pharmacy.

Professionalism and Assessment
The student will be evaluated by the staff pharmacists and the preceptor. There will be a ‘mid-term’ evaluation for each 5-week rotation, and a final evaluation at the end of each of the 5-week rotations. The student assessment consists of reviewing their progress toward their individual goals and their overall professionalism.

Resources
We have plenty of off-street parking available and a break room with microwave oven and a full size refrigerator. We have high-speed internet access and areas for students to work independently.
