Teaching Philosophy

The goal of this rotation is to expand the student's understanding of women's health issues in the context of community practice. Students are expected to participate in clinical and didactic work to increase their knowledge base. The rotation material is organized into topics to help the student fully master a concept. The modules include reading material from current literature, case studies based on real experiences, and tests that help the student focus on the most pertinent information. Students can expect discussion, and review of the cases with Michelle, and additional discussion about the practice of community pharmacy in the context of the information covered. In addition, students will spend 3-5 days in clinic with a practitioner in a women's health department observing appointments, and collaborating with providers to apply knowledge gained. Core topics include contraception, menopause, sexually transmitted diseases, fertility, emergency contraception, women's heart health, and other topics that are common in women, including thyroid disorders and migraines. Students are expected to complete a supplemental project that they chose, which may include a presentation, generation of patient education, etc. Because this is a community practice, opportunities for providing MTM services and participation in other pharmacy events give the student a chance to use their clinical skills, and may not be limited to women.

Detailed Site Information

Institution
Goodrich Pharmacy is an independent small chain with five locations. The St Francis store is located within a grocery store, and our other locations are within or affiliated with clinics. Our practice focuses on small town service and provision of first line health care.

Pharmacy Services
Goodrich Pharmacy St Francis continues to grow the dispensing portion of our business as the area's population expands. As the only pharmacy in the surrounding area, many patients also access us for health information. We are often the first point of triage for patients. We offer services including influenza vaccination and MTM appointments. Our service population covers all age ranges, from growing families to the elderly retired. We also participate in clinic research every 1-2 years for medications undergoing a change from prescription to over the counter status. We currently offer limited compounding. Michelle (Grossman) Johnson previously worked on a reservation under the Indian Health Service model of practice, and continues to use that model for daily practice of pharmacy. Michelle also manages the St Francis location. Erica Burman has taken additional training in veterinary compounding. Erica's background includes previously working as a vet technician, and she is expanding the compounding portion of our services.

Resources
The students have their own work area and computer with DSL access to the internet. Parking is free, and there is a microwave and refrigerator available for use, along with restaurants close by for lunch.
