Teaching Philosophy

My philosophy is “hands on practice”.  The student is not extra labor. They are here to experience what cannot be learned from books or classes.  I stress OTC’s very heavily and their part in the patient’s treatment. I want the student to experience all aspects of the job from processing scripts to being knowledge of the PIC’s responsibilities.  Since one the clinic’s focus groups are diabetes, the student will get much experience on diabetes education.

Detailed Site Information

Institution
Small retail pharmacy within Smiley’s Clinic specializing in Family Practice.  Daily Script count is between 80 and 100 and growing. Practice involves close contact with clinic staff including 18 residents.  Daily opportunities to counsel patients from various backgrounds.  Clinic has focus groups on diabetes, woman health issues and pediatrics which student will be expected to participate in. We are a 2 pharmacist and 2 tech site with the latest technology. The clinic is the Med schools largest residency site so lots of interaction with the residents.  We also have a small OTC department and the student will be expected to learn a great deal about OTC’s and herbal supplements.  We have easy access through the light rail (1 block away Lake Street Station) and city bus (2 blocks away at Cedar Avenue and 28th Street). We also have plenty of parking sites.  The building has a break room and even a shower and changing room should you bike to the site.  The Clinic has their own lab and x-ray department.

Institutional Mission Statement and Vision
We are Fairview, a health team dedicated to serving your needs.  Promising you exceptional care!

Pharmacy Services
We are a community pharmacy serving a variety of nationalities and their many Third Party providers.  Our durable medical dept is small, but we include a side trip to the local medical suppler to enlarge the student’s education.  We accept almost all insurance providers and are fully stocked with pharmaceuticals.  Though we use Fairview’s compounding pharmacy, we also do light compounding at the site. Our patients range from newborns to the elderly. The preceptor pharmacist has been practicing as a community pharmacist for 27 years.  The preceptor has had rotation students since 2001 and was named Preceptor of the Year in 2003.  The staff pharmacist has been practicing over 10 years and did a residency in Psyche at the VA. Our hours are M-TH 8am to 8pm. Friday 8am – 5:30pm.

Professionalism and Assessment
We will work together daily.  The student will usually mimic my work schedule. It will include 2 evenings a week.  We will meet daily at least an hour to discuss daily assignments.  At the end of each week will be an informal performance assessment. Most of the grading will be done by the preceptor with occasional input from the rest of the staff.

Resources
We have access to the internet and use micromedix. We have a break room on site and have fast food sites within blocks.  We have a secure office where personal belongings can be stored and a desk area to work on assignments.
