Students will be able to apply their class room knowledge by hands on experience in a real setting.  After some initial one on one with the preceptor, then the student will review charts and discuss cases with the preceptor.  The student will have direct contact with the patients, providers and nursing staff.  DRHC welcomes the opportunity to advance the education of future pharmacists.

Detailed Site Information

Institution
Deer River Healthcare Center (DRHC) is a 20 bed Critical Access Hospital located just east of the Chippewa National Forest, surrounded by the beautiful lakes of Northern Minnesota. By the summer of 2008, our new hospital addition should be complete.  This addition includes a new pharmacy and IV clean room.  Our primary care providers are from St. Mary’s/Duluth Clinic; the clinic is attached to DRHC.  We have a 44 bed skilled nursing facility attached to the hospital – Homestead rehabilitation and Living Center.  We also have an active Home Health Care department.

Pharmacy Services
The pharmacy has 1 full time pharmacist, 1 full time pharmacy technician, 1 part time pharmacy technician.  At DRHC, the pharmacy student would have the opportunity to experience all aspects of pharmaceutical care.  They would be involved with medication reconciliation, review patient’s charts for appropriate therapy, doses and duplication of therapy, medication preparation and dispensing, IV admixture, patient discharge counseling, along with many other experiences and responsibilities in the world of pharmacy.  There is great interaction between pharmacy and the other health care professionals at DRHC.

Resources
In the new facility there will be a computer work station for the student to use with internet access.  We do have a cafeteria in the hospital or the student may bring lunch and store it in a fridge in the pharmacy.  There is employee parking where the student will park.
