All Community Pharmacy APPE rotations take place in any one of our free standing CVS/pharmacy practice sites located in the Metro Area. Please contact us if you are interested in a site outside of the Metro Area in any one of the 43 different states we operate in. Your CVS Preceptors will engage you in patient care initiatives, pharmacy management, community outreach projects and disease state management. In addition, many of our sites house a Minute Clinic which is serviced by a nurse practitioner and/or a physician assistant. Where applicable, Minute Clinic offers a unique patient interfacing and the opportunity to practice interdisciplinary medicine with a different member of the healthcare team. Our two local Business Management Rotations are based from our Regional Business Office located in Mendota Heights and our Rx Supervisors will expose you to the “business side of community pharmacy” all over our Twin Cities region.

Our Rogers location is nestled in a growing north-west suburb of Minneapolis. Students will receive exposure to all the different aspects of retail pharmacy including insurance billing, compounding and management. Amy, an NDSU graduate assists interns with in-store brown bag seminars. She also enlists the students to visit the local high rises with her to participate in community outreach projects. Due to the high volume of new prescription business resulting from the nearby urgent care and physician’s office, there is no shortage of face-to-face counseling opportunities.

Our CVS in Delano is a mid volume community pharmacy in a rural setting. The pharmacy takes care of a generous number of transplant and geriatric patients. Donavan, the preceptor presents diverse educational programs at the two near by assisted living facilities, where prescriptions are also delivered for our patient’s convenience.

The CVS in New Hope is a low volume store located in a diverse neighborhood.  We treat a variety of conditions including a large number of elderly patients.  The store is surrounded by a couple of assisted living facilities, which are great for a number of Outreach Projects. The store also has a drive-thru and a double Minute Clinic where patients are seen by nurse practitioners for a variety of ailments.

Our Mounds View CVS is a low to mid volume store serving a generous geriatric population. Our in house Minute Clinic brings a lot of new prescriptions which gives the students high opportunity for counseling. Near by there are a couple senior high rises where we deliver prescriptions and OTC medications to those who need extra help. Our Maple Grove CVS has a mid to high volume pharmacy in part because of the double Minute Clinic, but also because of a recent acquisition. There is a multitude of opportunities to counsel patients on their prescriptions as well as over the counter medications. Both Darla and Mary like to show students all aspects of community pharmacy and prepare them to become very comfortable in the retail setting. The store also has a convenient drive thru for our pharmacy customers.

Opened almost one year, this store has a fast growing pharmacy located among new homes and a clinic next door.  Because we are in a new family suburb we have a variety of patients from senior assisted living condos to single family homes.  This location offers a student the chance to serve a small home town which is not to far from the city.  Here a student would be involved in community outreach, pharmacotherapy write-ups, special projects, and general exposure to daily pharmacy practices.

The student will be involved in the following activities: financial analysis and development of store operational strategies, community outreach, presentations on pharmacy staff, participation in regional and district meetings, specialized projects to drive business in the market and miscellaneous activities of day-to-day chain pharmacy supervision. This rotation is mentored by Aaron Jennissen, a University of Creighton graduate but Minnesota native who has a diverse community chain background and was brought to CVS to supervise a district of CVS stores and drive customer service excellence.

This rotation is designed to give students an opportunity to learn pharmacy management from a multi-store supervision stand point. This rotation is mentored by Rich Engleka. Rich, a native of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania graduated from the University of Pittsburgh. Rich worked as a Pharmacist for CVS in Columbus, Ohio before relocating to Minnesota and assuming the role of Pharmacy Supervisor and taking on the responsibility of managing an entire district of CVS stores and motivating a very talented team of professionals.
