Student Roles and Responsibilities: The pharmacy student will gain a solid understanding of the impact of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) on pharmacy practice. They will identify resources that can assist the Regional Pharmacist and other members in the Regional Office with CMS issues related to the Medicare drug benefit. They will also be expected to understand the concepts which influence governmental approach and policy as it relates to Medicare and Medicaid. This will be accomplished through weekly readings and discussion, as well as assignments through the Regional Pharmacist or senior regional management. The student will also participate in pharmacy case work, provider inquiries, Congressionals and researching CMS policy; as identified by the Region. In addition to weekly assignments, at the conclusion of the rotation the student is required to give a presentation on a current CMS topic to an appropriate audience in the Region. They will report to the Regional Pharmacist and the Medicare Part D Policy Pharmacist.
