Teaching Philosophy

We believe you will learn the most by managing your own patients and seeing them on follow-up. During the first week or two you will mainly observe the pharmacists providing patient care, towards the end of the rotation you will be the lead in providing the care for your patients.

During this rotation, you will learn as much as put into it. We encourage students to look up new disease states or drugs they are less familiar with and be able to develop a thorough care plan for each patient.

Detailed Site Information

Institution
Broadway is a large family medicine residence training site for University of Minnesota Physicians, affiliated with North Memorial Hospital. Students will work with a largely diverse underserved patient population with an average age of 19. Through this rotation, students will be able to participate in the urban curriculum. Students will focus on learning to manage chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol, congestive heart failure, and anticoagulation. In addition, students will help patients quit smoking. Students will also serve as a resource to physicians for patient care.

Pharmacy Services
We provide medication therapy management in addition to patient education. We also work in teams with other health care providers in individual and group settings.

The Broadway Pharmacy schedule is managed by two faculty clinical pharmacists and one U of Minnesota Pharmaceutical Care Leadership Resident.

Professionalism and Assessment
We provide feedback which is a collaboration of both pharmacists, physicians, and the pharmacy resident. This is done at the mid-point of your rotation and then again at the end. There is also a pre and post test we have you take for this rotation, this is not used for grading purposes, but as a guide to know where you may need more clinical knowledge

Resources
Laptops are available for patient care use and students are able to access all U of MN resources (in addition to UptoDate and Dynamed). Students need to fill out a security form 2 weeks prior to beginning their rotation in order to have access to the electronic medical record. Also, students will be enrolled into our WebVista Course which provides additional student resources. There is a library/sitting area for all students to place their personal items. We have a large break room with a refrigerator, microwave, toaster, dishwasher, water dispenser, and vending machines. Several fast food places are in walking distance. Parking is available in front of the clinic.

APPE Structure
Students spend most of their time in patient care activities in clinic with the pharmacist. One-half a day a week, students will spend time working with a physician and another half a day a week working in the clinic team. Students will also spend time in primary care topic discussions and self-directed learning. Depending on the student’s interest, opportunities are available for academic learning opportunities.

Student Roles and Responsibilities
Students will review patient charts, interview patients, provide medication counseling & education, provide lifestyle modification education and recommendations, and complete patient documentation.

Students are expected to complete a one-page drug review on a medication class commonly used in family practice at the end of the rotation. Examples are available.

Educational Opportunities
Students are able to participate in various activities. Noon conferences occur most days of the week, journal clubs every two weeks, topic discussions twice a week, and committee meetings once a month.

Other Requirements
Students should have a desire to work with under served patients.
