Teaching Philosophy

Students will work with members of the Clinical Services Department and will assist in completing project based work.   Students will work both independently and collaboratively.

BioScrip Infusion Services–BioScrip Infusion Services provide infusion medication therapies and related nursing services for a variety of complex, acute, and chronic conditions. BioScrip provides nursing services to patients’ homes. We also have identified ambulatory infusion sites as an alternative for infused medications. BioScrip Infusion Services pharmacies are JCAHO accredited and adhere to the highest standards for IV Admixture services.

BioScrip PBM Services–BioScrip PBM Services provide complete pharmacy benefit management services, including benefit plan design, pharmacy network management, and cost control solutions.  We offer a comprehensive scope of PBM services, including formulary management, an extensive pharmacy network of over 58,000 pharmacies, generic alternative programs, claims processing, management reporting, utilization and outcomes analysis, forecasting, and more.

Professionalism and Assessment
Assessment will utilize the evaluation forms and criteria outlined by the University.

Resources
Students would work in a cubicle environment and have access to the internet and BioScrip clinical subscription services, including Drug Facts and Comparisons and Clinical Pharmacology Online.  The facility has an onsite cafeteria and mini-kitchens, as well as free adjacent parking.

APPE Structure
Students will work in an office environment.  One on one teaching time would vary from week to week as the business needs allow, but would be at least 25% of the time. The student would have access to the preceptors at all times and would be physically located in close proximity to the preceptors.

Student Roles and Responsibilities

Learning Activities and Responsibilities

  • Learning will primarily be in the form of hands-on projects
  • Specific projects and activities will vary depending on the current workload of the clinical services department
  • Learn how to prepare for a managed care organization's Pharmacy & Therapeutics committee meetings
  • Learn the formulary review process for new drugs, and the maintenance procedures for health plans formularies
  • Learn information management strategies and communication skills regarding current clinical issues
  • Participate in various conference calls and committee meetings with clinical managers
  • Develop research skills by supporting clinical managers with various pending projects

Educational Opportunities:
Students will be invited to participate in group learning activities as time allows with BioScrip pharmacist.

Other Requirements
This rotation requires a phone interview with the preceptors.
