Teaching Philosophy


Bartlett is a hands-on learning experience. Students involved here are expected to participate in care and concern for our patients by interactive involvement. There are many opportunities for teaching at our institution and students are encouraged to be as involved in any of our services as they wish to be.


Detailed Site Information


Institution
BRH is a licensed 60 bed acute care facility located in State Capital of Alaska. Services include orthopedic surgery, ophthalmologic surgery, OB/GYN care, Cardiac Rehabilitation, Infusion Therapy as well as Medical/Surgery patients and a Critical Care Nursing Unit. Bartlett is also home to one of few in-patient psychiatric facilities in the state as well as the only substance abuse recovery center.

Pharmacy Services
Pharmacy services vary from order entry, medication reconciliation, discharge teaching and planning, Environment of Care Committee input, policy and procedure development and quality improvement

Professionalism and Assessment
Students will be assessed on a weekly basis during a review with the Pharmacy Manager or designee. Students are expected to conduct themselves in a manner befitting the profession and are held to the same standards of conduct as any regular staff member

Resources
Students will be provided access to patient records and information through Meditech and will be provided with appropriate resources for patient care or teaching. Pharmacy hours are from 7am until 11pm and the student is expected to spend 40 hours during the week engaged in hospital/pharmacy functions. Housing may be available if needed for students with enough advance notification. Juneau has public transportation available and it is possible for someone to function in Juneau without a vehicle.

APPE Structure
Students will be working in the main pharmacy overseeing drug therapy monitoring and clinical interventions. Students will also participate in discharge planning and some case management activities with other local agencies

Student Roles and Responsibilities
Student will be responsible for maintaining daily roster of patients requiring pharmacy intervention. Students will follow those patients through their hospital course and help the pharmacist with drug therapy until discharge.

Educational Opportunities
Students will be invited to attend most committee meetings with the preceptor and participate in any clinical and non-clinical activities of those committees. Students will be encouraged to rotate through some of the other areas of the hospital as deemed appropriate.

Other Requirements
Students should have a current Pharmacy Intern license from the State of Alaska.

APPE Structure
Students will be working in the main pharmacy area handling inventory, ordering, automated drug cabinet reconciliations and inventory, inspections and control of departmental floor stocks.

Student Roles and Responsibilities
Student will be responsible for understanding the principles of ordering and inventory management. Students will also be required to develop a sample quality improvement plan with a plan for implementation and tracking.

Educational Opportunities
Students will be invited to attend most committee meetings with the preceptor and participate in any clinical and non-clinical activities of those committees. Students will be encouraged to rotate through some of the other areas of the hospital as deemed appropriate.
