Abbott Northwestern is a 625 bed hospital with 5300 + employees, 500 volunteers, and over 1600 physicians on its medical staff. For the sixth year in a row, Abbott Northwestern Hospital is cited as one of the country’s best hospitals. In 2007, the hospital was ranked in eight specialty areas in the 18th annual edition of U.S. News & World Report's "America's Best Hospitals.
Pharmacy Services
Abbott Northwestern Hospital employs the decentralized pharmacist model, with pharmacist ‘teams’ providing services to many patient populations. Students will spend time with pharmacists working in the Cardiovascular ICU, Medical/Neurological ICU, Behavioral Health, Medical, Surgical, Renal, Cardiovascular, Orthopedic, Neurology, and Oncology areas. Since pharmacists rotate between centralized and decentralized duties, students will also be expected to learn distribution duties on top of assigned projects, patient cases, educational seminars, presentations, and meetings. For more detailed information (or examples of previous students’ schedules) please visit www.pharmacygeek.homestead.com..
Professionalism and Assessment
Students are graded at the end of the rotation and are routinely given verbal feedback on their performance during their five weeks. Staff pharmacists and managers routinely provide excellent feedback so the student is constantly being evaluated for his/her improvement. Grading is primarily based on a student’s willingness to learn, their professionalism, and ability to show improvement in knowledge base.
Resources
Students will be provided locker space, library access, free on-campus parking, and site specific pictures badges with the necessary building access. Student project space will be provided at designated areas. The cafeteria is available for lunch and a pharmacy break room is also available for students to use.

Preceptors
Students will be provided a comprehensive list of pharmacists and their area of specialty when they arrive. The pharmacy department employs 49 staff pharmacists, 55 pharmacy technicians, two operations managers, one clinical manager, three clinical coordinators, and one pharmacy director.
APPE Structure
Students will spend ~50% of their time with decentralized pharmacists working on pharmacist competencies, patient case write ups for informal presentation, evaluating/troubleshooting problematic medication orders, and completing formal clinical pharmacist consults. ~30% will be spent learning the role of pharmacy in other departments (field trips), completing assignments/presentations, and going to meetings/discussions. The final ~20% will be spent learning distributive functions and workflows in the main pharmacy, IV room, and surgery satellites.
Student Roles and Responsibilities
See APPE Structure.
Educational Opportunities
Students will be required to attend grand rounds, resident noon conferences (when able), journal clubs, lunch and learns, manager meetings (when applicable), committee meetings (when applicable), and topic discussions. These will be assigned primarily by the grading preceptor although they may also be assigned by a manager or other pharmacist.
Other Requirements
Students will be asked for their pharmacy background before starting their rotation. The assessment is done so the preceptor can tailor the experience to the students’ specific needs.
