I take a hands on approach to teaching my students the day to day running of my pharmacy. I keep my students busy with projects that are either mandatory through the school, or with projects that I make up on my own. I try to do daily topic discussions and daily quizzing sessions to assess their knowledge on both prescription medications and over the counter medications. Our daily discussions cover everything from heart disease and diabetes to tick bites and other the counter treatments of minor ailments
Institution
We run a community retail pharmacy serving all of Cook County, North Shore Hospital and Care Center, various group homes, and the Grand Portage Indian Reservation. Our pharmacy is a small one with a Script Pro100 robot. We also have a large front end to our pharmacy to take care of all of our patients’ personal needs.
Institutional Mission Statement and Vision
Our goal is to provide professional pharmacy services in Cook County and the surrounding area. We strive to be efficient while filling all prescriptions correctly. We also strive to have our staff be extremely helpful and friendly to all patients who visit our pharmacy.
Pharmacy Services
We fill and counsel patients on all of their new (and old) medications when necessary. We strongly encourage therapeutic substitution to save patients money, while keeping them on a medication that is just as effective as the expensive one they were on. We provide diabetic testing supplies and nebulized medications to all Medicare part D recipients. I also provide blood glucose screenings and blood pressure screenings free of charge. In the future we would like to implement Medication Therapy Management to our list of services, but due to our shortage of pharmacists, I am unable to start this project on my own. I am the only pharmacist who works at Arrowhead Pharmacy. I am also the PIC at North Shore hospital and its Care Center.
Professionalism and Assessment
At the students mid-point of their stay with me, I assess how they are doing, where they have progressed and where they may have some weaknesses that need to be worked on. I use the U of M’s assessment paperwork as a guide for me to see how each student is progressing. I do all of this solely by myself as the only pharmacist
Resources
A work space, computer access, lunch accommodations, and parking are available.

APPE Structure
Students will primarily be working at the retail pharmacy learning the day to day business of running a privately owned pharmacy. They will be counseling patients, helping with blood pressure and blood glucose screenings, implementing therapeutic substitutions for patients, and even learn some of the management skills, paperwork and everything else that you don’t get to learn in a chain pharmacy. They will be learning some of the hospital and care center side of the pharmacy, like unit dosing for the care center and how we operate the hospital pharmacy with just myself (whose time is spread very thin)

APPE Structure
These students will be splitting their time between the community pharmacy, the hospital, and the care center. They will be partaking in chart reviews, writing SOAP notes, looking for drug interactions, and making recommendations to physicians regarding optimal drug therapies for patients
Student Roles and Responsibilities
Students will also be involved in community projects such as “brown bag” meetings where patients bring in all of their meds for students to assess and make recommendations. They may also be able to take part in community education about drugs through the senior center, the clinic, and possibly at Grand Portage Indian Reservation.
