Student Organizations
Pharmacy students have opportunities for valuable experience and personal growth through activities outside the classroom. Students are encouraged to take an active part in a variety of student groups.
Student Organization Leaders 2009-2010
- College Board - The Pharmacy College Board is the student government body. It acts as the students' representative and liaison and sponsors many all-college activities. Its purpose is to advance students' interest in the college through active student participation. It is composed of class representatives and leaders of all student organizations in the college.
-
- The Honor Council is the student-run body that hears all cases regarding student misconduct. Students from each class on each campus are represented on this council.
-
- The Student Curriculum Council (StCurrC) serves as an Advisory Council to the Curriculum Council. The purpose of the StCurrC is to provide a mechanism for gathering constructive student input regarding the content, placement, and delivery of the curriculum, as well as all matters related to curricular operations in the College of Pharmacy. Student members are asked to share their perspective on what is strong within the program and what can be improved upon. The Council may meet a couple of times each semester and be charged with providing input to the College's curricular mission. There is one representative from each class, from each campus. This membership is continuous, meaning that when a student begins in Year 1 of the professional program, they remain a member until graduation. The College looks for students interested in improving the learning environment, and who can demonstrate professionalism in discussions on shaping how the future of the profession will look like based on how the college prepares them today.
-
- Minnesota Pharmacy Student Alliance (MPSA ): The alliance promotes the professional needs of students at the local, state, regional, and national levels. It is actively involved in educational activities and legislative matters affecting the profession at the state and national level.
-
- Professional Societies: There are three active professional pharmacy societies within the College: Kappa Epsilon, Kappa Psi, and Phi Delta Chi. These groups sponsor activities involving students, the College, the profession, and the public.
-
- Honor Society: Rho Chi, the national honor society of pharmacy, is represented at the University of Minnesota by the Mu Chapter. During their second professional year, eligible students may be elected to membership by society members. Election to the society is based on scholarship, character, and conduct.
-
- Multicultural Pharmacy Student Organization (MPSO)
This student group provides support to minority pharmacy students and promotes intercultural understanding and education to enable all pharmacy students to provide better patient care.
Council for Health Interprofessional Programs (CHIP)
This health sciences student organization promotes a team approach to health care delivery through sponsoring interprofessional social, educational, and service activities. In the Twin Cities, CHIP involves students from all six health professional schools in the Academic Health Center. In Duluth (CHIP-D), organization leadership and activities involve UMD pharmacy and medical students, as well as students in nursing, physical and occupational therapy, and health information technology at the College of St. Scholastica.
- Leadership Society: Phi Lambda Sigma , the national pharmacy leadership society, promotes the development of leadership qualities in pharmacy students. After the first professional year, eligible students may be elected to membership by society members. Election to the society is based on dedication, service, and leadership in the advancement of pharmacy.
-
- Graduate and Professional Student Assembly at the University of Minnesota (GAPSA ): Graduate and professional students use GAPSA as a forum to communicate and cooperate in promoting academic, social, professional, and economic aims.
-
- College Committees: Students are appointed to most standing and ad hoc committees that govern the college. These include the Student Affairs Committee (SAC), Academic Standing Committee (ASC), Admissions Committee (AC), Education and Policy Committee (EPC), and the Technology Committee.
- UMD PharmD Organization
The organization performs community projects that will help pharmacy students grow as professionals; educates people about the pharmacy profession; and organizes student activities to help pharmacy students grow as colleagues.
Student organizations in the College of Pharmacy seeking funding for their organization or student events should pay attention to the Guidelines for Accepting Gifts from external sources.
