Teaching Philosophy

Dr. Sivak believes in a private confidential setting that provides state of the art outpatient psychiatric care. In today's healthcare world, the emphasis in his practice is on the "back to basics", namely the therapeutic alliance between the physician and patient. The hallmark of this alliance is the emphatic process where the patient is not enabled, but educated and encouraged to take a active role in their psychiatric care and well being. This can facilitate the opportunity for the patient to achieve the highest possible level of functioning, the ultimate goal of the outpatient psychiatric treatment.

The back to basics approach shifts the focus from the corporatization of health care and moves the priority from image to basic professional, ethical, and competent physician care. This helps return more dignity to a person, when they are in the role of the patient and in need of psychiatric care. A patient does better when they feel they are treated like a person and not like a number. When a person feels more dignity and better about the care they are receiving they are more likely to take an active role in working toward and maintaining optimum health.

Dr. Sivak ascribes to the Biopsychosocial model in psychiatry. While training at The University of Rochester, one of the many mentors was Dr. George Engel, the founder and developer of the Biopsychosocial model. This humane approach to patient care supports the understanding of the person, not simply from a biological or disease standpoint but from an emotional and socio-cultural perspective incorporating all aspects of the persons life and the world around them.
