Pharmacy Services Regions Hospital Pharmacy is a full service pharmacy that offers a wide range of services to hospitalized inpatients, emergency clinic based and employee patients. Decentralized pharmacists and inpatient staff pharmacists work directly with patients and various health care professionals to promote patient safety, improved outcomes through effective, efficient, appropriate, safe and cost-effective medication use during the hospital stay.
Outpatient Pharmacy staff provides pharmaceutical services to discharged hospital patients, clinic patients and Regions employees.

- 43 staff and decentralized clinical pharmacists
- 46 pharmacy technicians
- 15 pharmacy support personnel
- 7 pharmacy managers (5 are pharmacists)
Professionalism and Assessment The designated preceptor will at minimum evaluate the student based on the objectives prepared by the College of Pharmacy. Final evaluation and feedback discussion will follow the approved evaluation form.
Students are expected to provide 1-2 formal, presentations during the rotation with presentation at pharmacy journal clubs or as identified by the preceptor.
Students will be monitored continuously to assure proper professional conduct while working at Regions Hospital. If any situation of arises, follow-up action will be based upon the nature of the event and opportunity to enhance the student's experience.
Resources Student Work Space: Students will have a computer work station available for projects and presentations. Students are otherwise expected to share space with other staff. They may also work in the Regions Hospital Medical Library.
Break Areas and Amenities: A microwave, refrigerator, coffee maker and break area are available in the inpatient pharmacy. A cafeteria is available on the second floor, and vending machines are located throughout the hospital.
Parking:
Parking is free for the student. During normal daytime hours, students will park in a designated parking lot off site and take a shuttle bus to the hospital. A $10.00 refundable deposit is required.
Access to Data/Libraries: The student will have access to the Regions Hospital Medical Library for on-site materials and for on-line journals. All computers throughout the hospital have Internet, MicroMedex access, and various on-line references. Medline can be accessed via the Internet throughout the hospital. The inpatient pharmacy also contains pharmacy reference texts.
Educational Opportunities: Inpatient - The student will be expected to attend and present at the monthly pharmacy journal club, and are encouraged to attend the daily noon grand rounds medical conference and daily morning report teaching rounds with the medical students and residents.
Outpatient - The student is expected to select a project and present findings at the conclusion of the rotation. Attendance at noon meetings and conferences will be based upon time available, topic and preceptor approval.

APPE Structure Students will have an assigned computer work station available for projects and presentations. Students are expected to share space with other staff in the Outpatient Pharmacy. They may also work in the Regions Hospital Medical Library as necessary.
Student Roles and Responsibilities Students will be on-site primarily during day hours (7am-5pm) Monday through Friday. The student may be assigned a weekend or evenings rotation to round out a typical outpatient pharmacist experience. The student will not have any on-call responsibilities.
Students will be exposed to all aspects of working in the outpatient pharmacy from the perspective of the pharmacist. Expectation is that by the end of the rotation, all students will be able to function as a Pharmacist with little direct supervision necessary. Regions counsels 100% of new prescriptions at the time of patient pick up.
Educational Opportunities: The student is expected to select a project and present findings at the conclusion of the rotation. Attendance at noon meetings and conferences will be based upon time available, topic and preceptor approval.
Other Requirements Students must have completed their PharmD III curriculum. Students must have proof of no tuberculosis infection (documentation of a negative Mantoux test) and are required to have completed the Hepatitis B vaccination series as determined by the hospital.
The student may come into direct patient contact, so universal precautions must be used in these situations. Confidentiality must be maintained at all times.

Students will be assigned to work time with various Pharmacy management staff, including, but not limited to:
- Director of Pharmacy,
- Inpatient Pharmacy Manager,
- Outpatient Pharmacy Manager,
- Manager of Business Operations and Finance,
- Supervisors, Lead Pharmacists and/or Hospital administration.
Student Roles and Responsibilities Students will be exposed to wide variety of Pharmacy functions. Students will be expected to attend management meetings scheduled during the work day (generally 7am-5pm) and off-site meetings as necessary.
The potential exists for interaction with patients from an administrative perspective (customer service, complaints, forums) and with hospital staff from a managers point of view. There will be a wide range of management experiences available depending up topics at hand.
The student will not have any on-call responsibilities.
Educational OpportunitiesThe student will be expected to take on at least one major project during the rotation as assigned by the Pharmacy Management team. Project will vary by rotation based upon need. What ever project that could be assigned to a current Manager, could be assigned to the student with a Managers oversight. During and at the end of the rotation, each student will be expected to present their findings relative to the project assigned with recommendations.
Goal of the rotation - provide variety of everyday management experiences.
Other Requirements There are no additional requirements for entrance into this APPE.
