Teaching Philosophy

Direct participation is the primary teaching method used.  The student is incorporated into the staff and exposed to a variety of experiences in patient care.  Students both learn and teach by way of staff inservices, drug monographs, drug information, and patient presentations.  Students should be self-directed and willing to participate in a variety of settings.

Detailed Site Information

Institution
The Red Lake Hospital/Clinic provides services to a wide range of age groups from infant to elderly.  The medical staff is comprised of Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, optometry, Psychiatry, and Advanced Practice Nurses.  Common services include chronic disease therapy, urgent/emergent care, optometry, behavioral health, infectious disease therapy, and women’s health.  The pharmacy provides care to a population of approximately 7,000 people and process an average of 600 prescriptions daily

Institutional Mission Statement and Vision
Our mission is to provide high quality health care with community involvement, and to promote continuous improvement and patient satisfaction.

Pharmacy Services
The outpatient pharmacy staff directly manage anticoagulation patients, and consult on medication therapy including infectious disease, chronic disease, psychiatric therapy, and pain management therapies among others.  Inpatient pharmacy services are also provided.  Emergent/urgent care clinic also staffs a pharmacist for consultation and pharmaceutical care.

Professionalism and Assessment
The pharmacy professional staff all work closely with the student and provide the preceptor with input relating to the final evaluation.  The student is assessed mid-term and at the conclusion of the rotation.  The assessment is based upon the student’s use of time, appropriateness of resources utilized for data collections, interest in the profession, and ability to apply didactic coursework.

Resources
The student will be provided workspace with access to computers, internet, and drug information. A locker will be provided, parking is free and available immediately outside the building.  There is no cafeteria at the facility, so lunch should be brought from Bemidji, or purchased at a local establishment.
