Detailed Site Information
Institution Fairview Mesaba Pharmacy is a retail pharmacy located in the front of the Mesaba Clinic. The clinic is attached to University Medical Center-Mesabi. We fill about 230 prescriptions a day as well as providing MTM, and educational programs including diabetes and smoking cessation.
Institutional Mission Statement and Vision Range Regional Health Services is an integrated healthcare system meeting the needs of our patients in an exemplary manner. We provide quality services while maintaining a caring and positive environment.
Pharmacy Services Fairview Mesaba Pharmacy is a typical retail pharmacy filling approx. 230 prescriptions a day. Strong utilization of a work-flow system featuring the QS1 system and operated by skillful technicians frees the pharmacist up to perform the required counseling services for both new prescriptions and refills. The location in the front of the clinic leads to direct interaction between clinic personnel and the pharmacy staff. In addition, a MTM program was recently started using the Assurance software. Recruiting patients is a high priority as we try to get this program going and is done by the entire staff. Also, the pharmacists provide education for the ADA recognized diabetes program at University Medical Center-Mesabi and also provide pharmacy consulting services to Northstar Hospice.
Professionalism and Assessment The preceptor and the student meet on a weekly basis to assess the student’s progress. This allows the student to know where they stand during the rotation as well as identify individual learning needs to be addressed during the remainder of the rotation.
Resources Computer and internet access are available and the facility has recently gone wireless throughout. The pharmacy subscribes to multiple sites including Epocrates, LexiComp and Pharmacist’s Letter.

Primary Preceptor Dawn L. Carlson, PharmD. RPh dcarlso7@range.fairview.org
Preceptors Cheryl Edman, R.Ph.
APPE Structure This rotation will focus on the patient in a retail pharmacy setting, rather than the prescription. While the student will be exposed to the filling system, most time will be spent counseling the patient following the actual filling function. The rotation will also focus on the other areas the pharmacy provides educational services for within the facility: diabetes and hospice. Approximately 2 days a week will be spent in diabetes, one day a week with hospice and the remaining days in the pharmacy concentrating on patient counseling as well as MTM.
Student Roles and Responsibilities Students will be responsible for being prepared for their daily activities. This may include additional journal readings if necessary. Most preparation will take place during regular hours in the pharmacy. The student will meet or exceed all outcomes determined by the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy for this rotation.
Educational Opportunities: The student may participate in any of the regularly scheduled programs throughout the facility. In addition to the pharmacy retail setting, the student will regularly interact with the nurses and dieticians in the diabetes program as well as the nurses and home health aides in the hospice program.
Other Requirements There are no additional requirements for entrance into this APPE.
