We want every student to have a positive and rewarding experience with us.  The more you put into the experience the more you will get out.  We have lots of knowledge to help you prepare yourself for independent practice.

Institution
Critical Access (25 bed) Community Hospital with 85 bed attached Nursing Home, Emergency Room, Multi specialty Surgical area, chemotherapy.

Pharmacy staff of three Pharmacists and 2 technicians.

Active in clinical practice, anticoag, kinetics, med reviews

Pharmacy Services
Pharmacy provides medications to inpatients using Meditech Pharmacy software and Acudose cabinets.  Emergency Room patient medication needs served with Acudose cabinets and take home started doses when Community Pharmacies are closed.  We review and make recommendations on every nursing home patient every month.  Work closely with Medical and Nursing staff to optimize medication therapy.  

Professionalism and Assessment
You will work with all three Pharmacists here.  We are a small hospital and sometimes there is only one Pharmacist working.

Resources
Parking is free and nearby.  We have internet access, Micromedex, Lexicomp etc. Small cafeteria and Gordy’s High Hat is just down the street.

APPE Structure
The institutional practice experience here will include most of the patient care elements with the addition of more inpatient responsibilities.  Student will perform IV, Chemo, Epidural and TPN prep.  Each day the student will prepare pharmacotherapeutic assessments and make recommendations. You will spend some time (days) at the Raiter Clinic (across the street), Emergency Room, Surgery, Diabetic Ed, Orthopedic Surgeon, and Respiratory Therapy.  The experience can be modified to meet your needs. 

Student Roles and Responsibilities
You will work with Pharmacists and Physicians’ to learn how patient care is delivered in our community.  You will review the medication regime of nursing home residents and make recommendation for improvements.  You may be asked to present medication information to patients and staff.  

Educational Opportunities
You will attend Pharmacy and Therapeutics committee, Quality Counsel, Nursing Home Quality improvement and other meetings.  Occasionally we host a lunch and learn conference in the Pharmacy or at the Clinic.

There are no additional requirements for entrance into this APPE.
