APPE Program

The Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs) consist of 45 weeks of pharmacy practice experience in the 4th year of the Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum. The APPE program begins in mid-May following the 3rd professional year and moves through 3 fifteen week trimesters, finishing in late April/early May the following year. Five core/required experiences and 3 elective experiences are completed by all students with all but the required Acute Patient Care APPEs (10 weeks) being 5 weeks in length. Each APPE type has specific learning outcomes to guide the student and preceptor and upon which the student evaluations are built.

APPEs are completed in pharmacy practice settings ranging from hospitals to community pharmacies to governmental agencies and ambulatory clinics. Sites for the completion of these experiences are grouped into 8 regions in Minnesota plus several available sites outside the state. Students are required to complete each 15 week trimester in one region; a student may elect to complete their APPEs all in one region or move between regions at the trimester breaks.
