Welcome to the University of Minnesota Pharm.D. Program

The college is ranked third in the nation by U.S. News and World Report, provides an outstanding education, and trains some of the best practitioners in the profess of pharmacy.  The college is also committed to preparing its graduates for pharmacy practice in the future by giving them tools to continuously learn well after they have graduated from the college.

The Doctor of Pharmacy degree program educates students to become pharmacists who are generalist pharmacy practitioners.  Students are prepared to identify, resolve and prevent drug related problems, and learn to provide patient care to achieve positive drug therapy outcomes that improve the quality of a patient's life.

Although a Bachelor's degree is not required for entry into the program, most applicants admitted to the program complete one before entering the Pharm.D. program.  There are a number of required courses that must be completed before enrolling in the college. The Pharm.D. Program is a four-year professional program of both didactic and experiential education, and is the only degree that prepares students to practice pharmacy in the United States.

In addition to being competent as generalist practitioners, graduates of the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy Pharm.D. program will also be:

  • Prepared for additional training in specialty practice, non-patient care roles, or research
  • Leaders within the profession and healthcare through innovative education, management, and practice improvements
  • Providers of public health services related to drug therapy, such as immunizations, health screens, and medication safety initiatives

The Pharm.D. program provides opportunities for students to explore and develop special expertise in the areas of practice and research through elective educational opportunities and extra-curricular activities.  The first three years of the curriculum provide the fundamental components of pharmacy education needed to practice in a variety of settings.  Beginning in the second year, student can take elective courses in specific areas of interest to round out their required courses.  The fourth year consists of a full year of Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences.

The Pharm.D. Program is offered in the thriving city of Minneapolis, and the scenic lakeside city of Duluth.  The curriculum is the same on both campuses and all students have access to the expertise of internationally known faculty on both the Twin Cities and Duluth campuses.  For more information on each campus and to see what current students have to say about the program, please visit the Duluth Campus and Twin Cities Campus web pages.
