Graduate Studies

Within Pharmaceutics, emphases are available in physical pharmacy, biopharmaceutics, and pharmacokinetics. Minor fields of particular value include biochemistry, biometry, chemistry, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, pharmacology, and statistics.

M.S. Degree

The Pharmaceutics program at the University of Minnesota does not currently offer entry to a Master's degree.

Ph.D. Degree Requirements

The program leading to the Ph.D. averages between 4 and 5 years in duration for students possessing an appropriate B.S. degree. The length of the program is reduced for students who have already completed prerequisites or some graduate coursework. Students generally take a total of 35-45 credits of upper-division or graduate-level (5xxx or 8xxx) courses over the initial 2 1/2 to 3 years. In addition, students complete a preliminary written exam, a written research proposal based on their thesis research, a preliminary oral exam, and finally a thesis and its defense. These requirements provide an excellent foundation for rewarding careers in the pharmaceutical sciences.

For the Ph.D. degree, the total program of coursework consists of the Major, Minor (or supporting field or 12 credits), and Language Requirement (or alternatively a Collateral field with a minimum of 6 credits). While a few courses are specified as being core to the Major and are required for all students, there is a great deal of flexibility in the choice of courses in the Minor and Collateral Field. In this regard, students have the opportunity to tailor their coursework to meet their specific educational interests.

Major

The following courses are intended to serve as a fundamental core of knowledge and are required for the Major. Additional courses are selected with the help of the major advisor.

  • Pharmaceutics: A minimum of 6 credits in courses numbered Phm 84xx, 3 credits of Seminar (Phm 8100) and 2 credits of Readings (Phm 8110, 8120 or 8150) are required.
  • Pharmacology: A comprehensive survey course in pharmacology.
  • Pharmacokinetics: An undergraduate course.
  • Chemistry: A physical chemistry background covering such topics as chemical thermodynamics and chemical kinetics.
  • Mathematics: An analytical mathematics background including an introductory course in differential equations.
  • Statistics: A course in statistics dealing with the analysis of biological and physical data.

Minor

The Minor or Supporting Field consists of 12 credits in related field(s) of interest.

Language Requirement

There is a requirement of one foreign language or a Collateral Field of Knowledge. To satisfy the collateral field requirement, the student completes 6 credits in a related field of interest, such as statistics or chemistry. Courses that are part of the Major may not be included in the Minor, Supporting Field or Collateral Field.

Specific information about program requirements after admission can be found in the Pharmaceutics Graduate Program Handbook.
