The Graduate Program in Pharmaceutics values diversity and considers applicants from a wide range of backgrounds and academic fields.  An exceptional scholastic record from recognized institutions is required.  For those individuals with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a field other than pharmacy, the program advisor may recommend additional coursework to provide the necessary foundation in pharmacy.

In addition to your undergraduate (and, in some cases, graduate) scholastic record, Pharmaceutics uses recent GRE scores, a statement of career goals, and 3 letters of recommendation to determine each candidate’s admissibility for the Ph.D. program.  Pharmaceutics prefers GRE scores of at least 80 percentile or higher for the quantitative and analytical sections (or 4.5 on the new analytical writing test), and a Grade Point Average of 3.2 for U.S. applicants or "First Class" (or equivalent) for foreign applicants.  A TOEFL score of 600 or higher is preferred for applicants whose native language is other than English. (The minimum scores for the new Internet-Based TOEFL, or "IBT", are 100 on the total score, plus section scores of 21 on the Writing and 19 on the Reading.)  Fall admission is preferred although admission for the spring semester may be considered.

How the Process Works

Applying to a graduate program can be a lengthy endeavor, so it is helpful to understand how the process works.  Please be aware that each program handles the process in a slightly different manner, but the general sequence of events is as follows.

When you apply for graduate studies at the University of Minnesota, you're actually applying to the Graduate School and requesting a primary assignment in a specific discipline, such as Pharmaceutics.  The Graduate School requires fundamental items (see complete list below).  Then, individual graduate programs can ask for additional information, such as the GRE, to more fully understand the scope of an applicant’s knowledge and preparation for graduate study.

Please note that the application fee is required.  There are no fee waivers for the Pharmaceutics program.  Since there are approximately 13,000 applications each year, an application without a fee cannot be processed by the Graduate School Admissions Office.  The amount of the fee can be found within the online application.

If you wish to know your chances for admission before paying the application fee, please complete and submit our free online Pre-Evaluation Form.  The Director of Graduate Studies for Pharmaceutics will reply in a few days via e-mail.

When the Graduate School receives all its requirements, it will release your file to the graduate program for a formal appraisal.  In Pharmaceutics, a faculty admissions committee carefully reviews each completed application and reports their recommendation to the Graduate School.  The Graduate School has final authority and will issue the official e-letter of admission or denial.

December 31 is the deadline
for submitting requirements to ensure the Graduate School and the Pharmaceutics faculty have sufficient time to process and evaluate your credentials.  Because the electronic scores from ETS are difficult to interpret or identify as yours, we ask that you provide paper copies of both your GRE and TOEFL (for foreign applicants).  Photocopies are fine, but handwritten or self-reported scores are not accepted.

     ETS Institution Codes:

     6874  Graduate School, U. Minnesota, Minneapolis/St. Paul
     0613  Pharmaceutical Sciences

After you submit your online application and send other credentials by mail, it is important to periodically check the status of your online application and monitor your e-mail for communications from the Graduate School Admissions Office.  If anything is missing, they will send you a message.
