Mahmoud M. Abdel-Monem received his Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry from the College of Pharmacy, University of Minnesota in 1964. Dr. Monem returned to Cairo, Egypt after his doctoral work and began working as Director of Pharmaceutical Chemistry Research at the Nile Company for Pharmaceuticals and Chemical Industries in Cairo, Egypt. He stayed in Cairo until 1968, when he decided to return to the University of Minnesota.

In March of that year, he returned to join a research group in the Department of Medicinal Chemistry under the guidance of Professor Philip Portoghese. He began studies in the emerging area of the relationship between the structure of drugs and their rates and routes of metabolic disposition. Several publications resulted from these studies. Dr. Monem spent two years at the University of Illinois in 1970-71 and once again returned to the University of Minnesota as Assistant Professor. By 1980 he was promoted to Full Professor.

During his sixteen years at the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy, he served in many administrative positions, including Unit Director, Assistant Dean, Department Chair and Associate and Interim Dean.

Dr. Monem left Minnesota for the University of Washington at Pullman where he served as Dean from 1987-1998.

Having retired from academia, Dr. Monem is currently working full-time with Zinpro, a Minnesota start-up company.
