In September of 2002 representatives from seventeen academic health centers met at the University of Minnesota Center for Excellence in Critical Care to discuss the impact an alliance between these institutions could have on the practice of critical care medicine. Discussion during this meeting led to the acknowledgement that there remains a gap between what is known from research in critical care and the every day practice in intensive care units. Academic Health Centers are uniquely positioned, due to their missions of research, education, and outreach, to take a leadership role in improving critical care medicine through translation of research into practice. The teaching hospitals associated with academic health centers are generally highly respected and often looked to for guidance in health care improvement.Recognizing this need, the group agreed to form a network, known as the Partnership for Excellence in Critical Care, and to seek ways to work together for the advancement of critical care practice. Subsequent meetings and working groups have led to the development of this website and of both research and educational initiatives.
The Partnership for Excellence in Critical Care wishes to work with individuals, organizations, industry, foundations and government agencies interested in the advancement of the practice of critical care.
Financial Support
Recognizing the impact critical illness has on the larger society, Eli Lilly and Company provided an educational grant for the formation of the Partnership for Excellence in Critical Care and the development of this website.
