Professor Ty Soine was born in Virginia Minnesota in 1915. He received his B.S. degree in pharmacy in 1938 and his Ph.D. in pharmaceutical chemistry in 1943, both from the University of Minnesota. Following graduation he joined the College of Pharmacy as an instructor and rose through the ranks to full Professor in 1950. Professor Soine chaired the Department of Medicinal Chemistry from 1970 to 1974 and held the position of Assistant Dean for Graduate Studies and Research until his sudden death in 1978.
Professor Soine had a long and distinguished career in medicinal chemistry and natural products chemistry. The scientific community recognized his achievements when he was awarded the AphA Research Achievement Award in Natural Products Chemistry in 1964. Dr. Soine had a lasting influence on the lives of his students and colleagues with whom he shared his warm personality and sense of humor. Those of us who worked with him over the years still remember his subtle wit and his active and dedicated interest in his students
It is in Professor Soine's memory that the Soine Lecture in Medicinal Chemistry has been established. Through this lecture the department recognized scientists who have made outstanding contributions to medicinal and natural products chemistry.
