  • The Department of Medicinal Chemistry consists of a diverse group of faculty members, Ph.D. graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and research scientists working at the interface of chemistry and biology. Areas of research focus in the Department include antiviral drug design, cancer drug discovery and chemoprevention, chemical biology, carcinogenesis, peptidomimetics, receptor modeling, drug metabolism, gene therapy, combinatorial biosynthesis, natural product chemistry and NMR and X-ray crystallography.   • Bridging the fields of biochemistry and microbiology with computational sciences, Amin and her researchers are working on several projects, including designing small-molecule anthrax toxin lethal factor inhibitors for use as emergency therapeutics in a bioterror attack, identifying ricin toxin A inhibitors as counterterrorism measures, and engineering enzyme active sites to rapidly and effectively hydrolyze fast-acting nerve agents on the battlefield or in civilian terrorism scenarios.   • Researchers will investigate pharmaceutical alternatives to existing hormone-based birth control under a new $8.3M NIH contract.  The primary goal of the five-year research contract is to both develop new non-hormonal male and female birth control drug targets and expand on existing targets.   • Our Ph.D. graduate students receive a diverse educational experience in chemistry and biology that prepares them for the evolving multidisciplinary research in the pharmaceutical industry and the academic biomedical arena. Read more
  • The new book, From Digitalis to Ziagen, covers the history of the University of Minnesota’s Department of Medicinal Chemistry.

    Authored by Professor Yusuf Abul-Hajj and Richard Broderick, the book covers everything from the establishment of the College of Pharmacy and the department, to profiles of notable faculty members and the leadership role the department and its faculty played in drug development. Read more
