Introduction: Dr. Sorensen has been with the University of Minnesota since 1998. Prior to joining the College, he held a joint appointment with the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Center and Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia and also served as a Clinical Manager for PCS Health Systems. He is a native Minnesotan, hailing from the small rural community of Tyler, MN. Dr. Sorensen currently serves as the College of Pharmacy’s
Ambulatory Care Residency Program Director. He also serves as Associate Department Head in PCHS, focusing on supporting practice-based faculty and practice-related activities of the department. He is a graduate of the American Association of College’s of Pharmacy Academic Leadership Fellows Program and a Past-President of the Minnesota Pharmacists Association.
Teaching and Scholarship Interests Leadership Development:Dr. Sorensen’s has long held an interest in leadership development and the manner in which leader’s facilitate positive change. He has developed and leads innovative pharmacy practice
residency experience focused on preparing graduates to lead practice advancement in ambulatory care. With a group of colleagues he developed and leads the College’s
Leadership Emphasis Area in the PharmD program, which has been recognized by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy’s Innovation in Teaching Program. He serves on the Advisory Board for the American College of Clinical Pharmacy Leadership Academy and is a frequent presenter on leadership development.
Serving the Medication Use Needs of Underserved Populations:
Dr. Sorensen has over 10 years of experiences working with health care organizations serving underserved communities in both rural and urban settings. He has successfully collaborated with several rural health care organizations and federally qualified health centers to secure funding to increase access to medications and expand the role of pharmacists in interprofessional care delivery teams. He serves as a pharmacy services consultant with the federal Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and been serving on the National Faculty for HRSA’s
Patient Safety and Clinical Pharmacy Services Collaborative (PSPC), serving as the Faculty Co-Chair in 2008-09. He has developed tools that assist safety net organizations assess opportunities to enhance access or service delivery through use of the Public Health Service 340B Drug Discount Program and integration of clinical pharmacists in primary care activities.
Advancement of Pharmacy Residency Education:
Dr. Sorensen has served as Director of the College’s Ambulatory Care Residency program since 1999 and has led its focus on achieving a two-pronged mission of developing outstanding pharmacy practitioners and using the program as a vehicle to advance the scope of pharmacy services in Minnesota. He is particularly interested in exploring mechanisms that create mutually beneficial partnerships between health care organizations and an academic institution that serve the pharmacy practice needs of Minnesota. He is currently serving on the American College of Clinical Pharmacy Task Force on Residency Training.
