Introduction:
Robert J. Cipolle has been with the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy since 1976. He served as Dean of the College of Pharmacy from 1992 to 1994. He also served as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, 1988-1992.
Dr. Cipolle received his Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honors from the University of Illinois Medical Center College of Pharmacy in 1974 and his Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy in 1976. During his tenure with the University of Minnesota, Dr. Cipolle has served the Department of Pharmacy Practice as the Associate Head for Post-Graduate Education and Research, the Vice-Chairman and Acting Chairman. His professional experience also includes serving as the Director of Clinical Research for the College of Pharmacy, Assistant Director of Clinical Pharmacy Services at the University of Minnesota Hospital and Clinic, and Associate Director of Pharmaceutical Services at St. Paul-Ramsey Medical Center. Dr. Cipolle is a member of the graduate faculty of the College's graduate programs in Hospital Pharmacy and Social and Administrative Pharmacy. Bob Cipolle was named a fellow in the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (FCCP-1985) and a fellow in the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists (FASHP-1991).
Dr. Cipolle was the Project Director for a National Institutes of Health training grant designed to provide highly talented Pharm.D. students with research experience to increase awareness of the opportunities available as clinician investigators. He also served as the pharmacy faculty mentor on the Minnesota Area Geriatric Education Center grant, a federally funded project to improve geriatric instruction and multidisciplinary research and to enhance the knowledge and skills of health professionals caring for the elderly.
Bob Cipolle has been instrumental in the efforts to implement problem-based education in the pharmacy curricula. His courses in pharmacotherapy help students to develop their skills in identifying, resolving and preventing drug therapy problems.
Dr. Cipolle has also been a primary investigator on a three-year, $1 million research project entitled The Implementation and Evaluation of Pharmaceutical Care in the Community Practice Setting. This study represented a collaborative effort between the College of Pharmacy, the Minnesota Pharmacists Association, the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy, managed care organizations and the pharmaceutical industry. The aim of this project was to describe how the pharmacist delivers pharmaceutical care in the community practice setting and to determine the impact of pharmaceutical care on patient outcomes, the pharmacist and payors.
He currently teaches the practice of pharmaceutical care in the professional curriculum, trains practicing pharmacists and conducts research in the community practice setting. He recently completed a second text describing pharmaceutical care practice that is co-authored with Drs. Strand and Morley. Pharmaceutical Care Practice: The Clinician’s Guide is published by McGraw Hill.
Dr. Cipolle is a founder of a U. of Minnesota start-up company, Medication Management Systems, Inc. MMS supports pharmacists and physicians providing medication management services to patients with state-of-the-art technology (Assurance System™) and practice development training programs.
