Practice
Introduction
Providing pharmaceutical care for patients is a vital focus of the staff of the Peters Institute. Patients must experience pharmaceutical care first-hand in order for the practice to take root and flourish - there is no better way to promote pharmaceutical care. It is through the care process and the development of therapeutic relationships with individual patients that the practice will thrive.
The standards of care for pharmaceutical care practice that were developed by the Peters Institute staff have become the guide for starting new practices throughout the United States and internationally. Over 50 new pharmaceutical care practices have been initiated by faculty from the Peters Institute of Pharmaceutical Care and the College of Pharmacy. These practices were established in community pharmacies and in medical clinics mainly in Minnesota and Florida. Data from these practices are collected in the Peters Institute and analyzed for numerous purposes, including clinical improvement health care savings; causes, frequency, and distribution of drug therapy problems; and common medical conditions and drug therapy problems. These data are an invaluable resource for pharmaceutical care practitioners, educators, and students.
The developments in practice during the last five years are not only exciting but are crucial to the continued expansion of pharmaceutical care services to patients. We believe that pharmaceutical care must be available to all patients who may benefit from it, and it is part of our mission to encourage and support the development of new practices, working with many diverse groups, in order to reach those patients who are in need.
